WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- With an eye on adding to its string of recent 20-win seasons and NCAA Division III national tournament appearances, the Whitman College men face upstart Willamette University in Saturday's final of the Northwest Conference post-season tournament at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club.

The winner of Saturday's final, which starts at noon, gets the NWC's automatic berth in next month's national championship field.

Whitman, ranked No. 20 nationally and the top seed in this weekend's tournament, improved to 19-4 on the season and advanced to the final with a 5-1 semifinal victory over always tough Pacific Lutheran.

Willamette, seeded third, got rolling early Friday afternoon with 5-0 first-round romp over sixth-seeded Puget Sound.

In the semifinals, which got underway mid-afternoon and ended under the lights, Willamette upset Linfield, the No. 2 seed, by a 5-3 margin.

Willamette, now 13-7 on the season, lost twice to Whitman during the regular, by scores of 7-2 and 8-1. Whitman has won the last three NWC championships and it hasn't lost an NWC regular season match in more than four years.

In Friday's other first-round match, fourth-seeded Pacific Lutheran rallied for a 5-4 victory over fifth-seeded Whitworth.
