WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College junior Alyssa Roberg and first-year doubles partner Courtney Lawless finished a big tennis week with a 2-2 record and sixth-place finish after dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision Friday afternoon at the USTA / ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala.

Kristin Lim, a junior at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and the reigning NCAA DIII singles champion, teamed with sophomore Crystal Lim to pull away from their Missionary counterparts early in each set.

"It sucks to lose to anyone, but we obviously got beat today by a very good team," Whitman coach John Hein said.

"If Kristin Lim doesn't have the biggest forehand in DIII tennis, it's certainly one of the biggest. She and her partner hit some big shots and just executed better than we did."

The two teams traded service breaks early in the first set for a 2-2 tie, but the CMS duo assumed command by taking the next four games.

The Athenas won five of six games to start the second set and stifle Whitman hopes for comeback. Whitman held serve to cut its deficit to 5-2 before CMS served out the match.

"This wasn't our best tennis today, but Alyssa and Courtney played really well at times this week and did a good job competing," Hein said. "They learned a lot and won a couple of matches to show that our program continues to get stronger."

The CMS team was seeded second in this week's doubles bracket after finishing last season as the fifth-ranked doubles pair in the country.
