WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- With five guys scoring in double figures, Whitman College ran its early season record to 2-0 with a 98-74 non-conference basketball victory over Portland Bible College Saturday night in Portland, Ore.
Junior Brandon Shaw and sophomore Peter Clark paced the Whitman offense with 15 points apiece. The Missionaries also got 11 points each from sophomores Drew Raher and Ingnas Pavilonis and freshman Ryan Gilkey.
The loss dropped Portland Bible, a member of the Pacific Christian Athletic Conference, to 3-5 on the season.
One of Portland Bible's victories came earlier in this week in a 111-99 triumph over Pacific University, one of Whitman's Northwest Conference rivals.
In Saturday's game, Whitman pulled away from the outset and finished the first half with a 47-26 lead.
The Missionaries shot 51 percent (36 of 70) from the floor for the game and outrebounded the Wildcats 40-25. Whitman snatched 17 of its boards at the offensive end.
Shaw collected team-high totals in rebounds with seven and steals with three. Raher also had seven rebounds while Gilkey grabbed six.
Clark did his scoring from 3-point line, hitting five of eight attempts. Pavilonis was three of eight from long range.
Whitman also got nine points from junior David Michaels, who made all four of his field goal attempts, and eight points and four assists from freshman Josh Duckworth.
All 12 Missionaries made the scoring column with all but one player getting at least 10 minutes on the floor.
Kenan Dizdarevic led Portland Bible with 22 points.
Whitman returns home next Friday and Saturday to host the four-team Walla Walla Vineyard Inn Classic in Sherwood Center.
Whitman plays both nights at 8 p.m., first against Eastern Oregon and then against Northwest University. Pacific Lutheran, the fourth tournament team, plays the same two opponents (alternating nights) at 6 p.m.
