Whitman College will host two fairs in 2009-2010. On Tuesday October 27, 2009 the Student Engagement Center held its annual Graduate School Fair followed by our annual Career and Internship Fair in the spring. Additionally, Whitman students are encouraged to attend other colleges and university career fairs. These events are great opportunities to facilitate your job search and contact a large number of employers very quickly. You can also download a copy of a useful guide, Making the Most of a Career Fair, to gain a few useful tips.
The Career Consultant Network is a database of alumni of the college, in many occupational fields who have agreed to make themselves available to talk to current students and alumni about their jobs and careers. Some of them have agreed to sponsor internship/summer job opportunities. Others may have hints on where to start. Make an appointment with the Student Engagement Center to find out how to connect with these consultants and remember to utilize these volunteers when searching for your internships.Directories and Books
Summer job and internship directories (e.g. The National Directory of Internships, America’s Top 100 Internships, The Internship Bible, Internship Opportunities at the Smithsonian Institution) are available in the Student Engagement Center Library. They are a great resource and can give you an idea of what companies and organizations you might be able to contact in your home town or other parts of the country.
Many faculty members offer research opportunities for students, and different departments may have quality internships/jobs over the summer. Start talking to your professors and other faculty/staff members! Additionally, on-campus job openings for students can be accessed here.
