Women's Tennis Wins 5th Straight at Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Strong singles play at the top of the line-up cemented a fifth straight win for the Whtiman Women's Tennis team today at Whitworth. After leading 2 - 1 after doubles, the Missionaries got wins at No. 1 - 4 singles on their way to a 6 - 3 win that improves their conference record to 4 - 0 and overall mark to 5 - 1.

Courtney Lawless (So., Austin, TX) breezed in her No. 1 singles match against Saryn Mooney 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 Alyssa Roberg (Sr., Scotts Valley, CA) improved her spring season singles record to 4 - 0 as she defeated Jessi Steele 6-2, 6-1. After winning the first set 6-0 at No. 3, Morgan Lawless (So., Austin, TX) faced a battle in the second set with Taylor Pena who took the match to a 6 - 6 tie; Lawless won a close tiebreaker, 7-5, to take the match.

JennaDobrin(Fr.,Camarillo, CA) downed Debra Wingfield 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, making the match tally 6 - 1 in favor of the Missionaries. With the match decided, the Pirates showed their pride in winning the last two matches. Kaylee Lamm won a grueling match against Madison Webster (So., Long Beach, CA) 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6). And in another test of wills, McDivitt prevailed over Katrina Allick (Fr., San Francisco, CA) 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 -- Allick making her collegiate top 6 singles debut.

In doubles, Whitman No. 1 team of C. Lawless and Roberg outduelded Pena and Mooney 8-6. At No. 2, M. Lawless and Dobrin notched Whitman's second win of the match with an 8-2 conquest of Steele and Annika Westre. Whitworth grabbed its first win of the day at No. 3 when Wingfield and McDivitt pulled away from Webster and Allick 8-4.

Coach John Hein said of the day's work "I'm really proud of the team today.  It wasn't our best day of doubles but Morgan and Jenna really led the way and then Alyssa and Courtney showed great composure to hold off Whitworth's team when they got on a roll.”

Whitman travels across the state to face Puget Sound tomorrow, Sunday, at 9 am before facing Pacific Lutheran at 2pm.
