CLARKSTON, Wash. – The Whitman women’s golf team shot a solid second-round 329 and had the top three individual tournament scores in winning the Warrior Invitational Tuesday at the Clarkston Golf and Country Club.

Following their opening round 326, Whitman’s 656 total gave them a 21 stroke winning margin over host Lewis-Clark State and a 39 stroke edge over College of Idaho – two NAIA scholarship programs that are expected to compete at Nationals.

“It was a tremendous confidence booster for our team to come out with a 21 stroke victory”, said Coach Skip Molitor, “against a scholarship program, a contender for the Frontier conference and they have been to a half-dozen National Champonships in the last 8 years.”

On Tuesday, Whitman Junior Catelyn Webber (Bellevue, WA) followed her opening round 79 with a solid 81 to capture medalist honors for the first time in a collegiate tournament, with a two-day total of 160. One stroke behind was teammate Katie Zajicek (Jr., Corvallis, OR) with a 161, and three strokes back was Missionary Kelly Sweeney (So., Enumclaw, WA) at 163. Elaine Whaley (Jr., Spokane, WA) and Caitlin Holland (Sr., Edgewood, WA) rounded out the Missionary scoring with 172 and 176, respectively.

On her final round, Webber sank a 10 foot putt on the 17th hole and an 8-footer on 18, to preserve her victory. In claiming her first collegiate championship, she also hit 14 greens in regulation on Tuesday. Zajicek was the model of consistency, carding 81’s on both days and never shooting higher than a bogey in her final round.

Sweeney bounced back after an opening round 86, to shoot a 77, the lowest round of the day by two strokes, taking only 29 putts to post her score.

The Lady Missionaries are now bound for Hawaii, where they will participate in the three-team Aloha at Oahu Classic March 21 – 22.

These ladies have basically established the women’s golf program at Whitman College”, says Molitor. “And they are more than deserving of this trip (to Hawaii).
