Women Netters Take UT Tyler 7-2 as They Continue CA Swing

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The 27^th ranked Missionaries won their second match in three days on their California swing when they downed UT Tyler 7-2 this morning, improving their overall mark to 11 – 2. The Patriots fall to 7-6.

Things started off briskly for Whitman as they swept doubles to give them a prohibitive 3 – nothing lead. At No. 1, Alyssa Roberg (Sr., Scotts Valley, CA) and Courtney Lawless (So., Austin, TX) defeated Jessica Blundell and Jennifer Payne 8-4. Maddy Webster (So., Long Beach, CA) and Morgan Lawless (So., Austin, TX) were victorious at No. 2, downing Rachel Cole and Nicole Musngi 8-6. Kate Rubinstein (Fr., Portland, OR) and Katrina Allick (Fy., San Francisco, CA) bested Haley Abro and Janae Warren by the same score.

C. Lawless rolled at No. 1 singles, winning 6-2, 6-1 over Blundell. Roberg continued the momentum at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory of Cole. M. Lawless also prevailed by a 6-1, 6-1 count – Payne being the victim. UT Tyler got its first “W” at No. 4 where Musngi downed Jenna Dobrin (Fy., Camarillo, CA) 6-0, 6-2.

Rubinstein notched Whitman’s seventh point at No.5 singles, outlasting Warren 7-5, 7-6 (7-2). Kate Kunkel-Patterson (Sr., Yakima, WA) showed her toughness in her match against Emily Evans at No. 6, battling back from a 3-6 first set loss, to win the second set 7-6 (7-3), before being edged in the match tiebreaker (8-10)

The Missionaries have the day off before arriving in Santa Cruz for a Saturday matchup with the No. 28 ranked Banana Slugs. The Whits edged UCSC earlier this season at the Bratton Tennis Center 5-4 during the Whitman Winter Classic. The Slugs, who were not ranked in the top 25 before the spring season began, moved into the rankings last week.

After Saturday’s match, Whitman will remain in Santa Cruz to play No. 22 ranked Redlands before heading home to resume conference play.
