Women Netters Edge Puget Sound to Remain Unbeaten in NWC

TACOMA, Wash. -- Facing a two-match day, the Whitman women's tennis team managed gutted out a 5 - 4 victory at Puget Sound this morning before heading to Pacific Lutheran in the afternoon, relying heavily on impressive doubles play that gave the Missionaries a big early lead. The win improved the Whits overall record to 6 - 1 and 5 - 0 in conference.

Courtney Lawless (So., Austin, TX) and Maddy Webster (So., Long Beach, CA) prevailed at No. 1 doubles 8 - 3. Katrina Allick (Fr., San Francisco, CA) and Jenna Dobrin (Fr., Camarillo, CA) notched the same score at No. 2 and Kate Rubinstein (Fr., Portland, OR) and Kate Kunkel-Patterson (Sr., Yakima, WA) cruised 8 - 1 in their match for the doubles sweep.

The Loggers worked their way back into the match when Logan Thompson defeated Dobrin 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. UPS narrowed the lead to just one when Josie Dow won in a closely contested two-set match against Erin Minuth (So., San Francisco, CA) 6-4, 6-4.

C. Lawless gave the Whits a little more cushion with her No. 1 singles victory over Maddie Thiesse 6-1, 6-1.  Morgan Lawless (So., Austin, TX) sealed the deal by defeating Jenna Gerdsen 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, providing Whitman with its 5th match.

At No. 4, Marissa Friedman out battled Rubinstein, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 and Olivia Bates (Jr., Edmonds, WA) gave Malia Ford everything she could handle before seeing victory disappear in a tiebreaker 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 6, to bring the finally tally to Whitman 5 Puget Sound 4.

After the victory, with no time to waste, the Missionaries headed to Pacific Lutheran for a 2 pm match
