February 12, 2013

Walla Walla, Wash. – After winning three individual events, including breaking the Northwest Conference meet record in the 100 freestyle, Whitman swimmer Karl Mering ‘15 was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Male Swimmer. Mering also swam on the 400 medley relay team that took the title in a meet record time of 3:06.10.

In the 100 free, the sophomore from Boise, Idaho touched the wall in 45.46, which was also a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships in March. This past weekend at the NWC Championships, held in Federal Way, Wash., Mering’s two other individual titles came in the 50 free (20.87) and the 100 butterfly where he set not only a meet record, but also, a new conference mark with a time of 48.59 – which automatically qualifies him for the NCAA meet and is currently the fastest butterfly time in Division III.

Mering’s performance at this year’s conference championships followed up his terrific first-year performance at last year’s event when he won titles in the 100 freestyle and the 100 fly. A Whitman swimmer has won the award the last two consecutive years, Missionary Galen  Sollom-Brotherton ‘14 receiving the honor last year after, also, winning three individual titles.
