Men's Golf in 2nd After Day 1 of Warrior Classic

CLARKSTON, Wash. – The Missionaries fought through foggy and cold weather conditions to post a first round score of 311 at the Warrior Classic being held at the Clarkston Golf and Country Club., good enough for a second place tie with Whitworth. Host Lewis-Clark State which shot a 297 collective first round tops the leader board.

Sophomore Scott Martin (Escondido, CA) shot the low round for the Missionaries, posting a solid 76, in which he made two birdies and 6 bogies. Martin almost holed out on the par 4, 362 yard fourth hole, when he his second shot from 115 yards away hit the pin and the cup simultaneously. The ball spun back to leave Martin an 8-inch putt for birdie which he proceeded to sink. “Scott is playing very well right now and he is starting to putt with more confidence”, said Coach Peter McClure.

Andrew Welch (Jr., Phoenix, AZ) and Geoff Burks (Sr., Edmonds, WA) each posted 77 while Daniel Hoffman (Fy., Los Altos, CA) mustered an 81 despite struggling to hit the fairways off the tee. Jefferson Liu (Hong Kong, China) rounded out the top 5 scores with an 85.

Kent Hagen of Washington State, who is playing as an individual, shot the individual low round of the day, posting a 69. The lowest individual round for the competing teams came from the Warriors Jason Molner who carded a 71.

With 18 holes left in the two-day event, McClure said, “I feel very good about the way the guys played today.  When we started this morning it was foggy and cold but our perseverance paid off and were in striking distance.”
