March 20, 2013

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman sophomore tennis player Courtney Lawless (So., Austin, TX) has been tabbed the Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time during the tennis spring season. Lawless received the honor back on March 5th when she went 6-0 during three conference road victories for the Missionaries.

This week, the crafty netter was stellar in the Whits California trek that pitted them against several highly ranked teams with Lawless winning all of her singles matches, several of them grueling affairs against top competitors.

In Whitman’s upset of No. 14 Trinity University, Lawless teamed with partner Alyssa Roberg (Sr., Scotts Valley, CA) to win at No. 1 doubles before claiming victory at No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 6-1 victory of Thavindra Ekanayake.  Lawless and Roberg got another “W” in doubles, coupled with a two-set victory at No. 1 singles for Lawless, who only surrendered 3 games, in the win over UT Tyler.

In two team losses to No. 28 UC Santa Cruz and No. 13 Redlands, Lawless won both of her singles matches at the top of the line-up, finding her second wind in a marathon match against Redland’s No. 1 player Jessica Ly, 6-1, 4-6 (10-1).

The 27th ranked Missionaries (11-4, 8-0 NWC) return to conference play April 6, when they host Pacific University at 10 am.
