Baseball Wins Final Game of UPS Series to Eclipse Last Year's Win Total

TACOMA, Wash. -- Kyle Moyes homered and drove in four and Justin Weeks pitched 7 complete innings as the Missionaries took the final game of a three-game set at Puget Sound. The win gives the Whits their first conference win of the season (1 - 2) and their 6th overall (6 - 7), eclipsing their entire win total for last season.
A five-run sixth proved to be the clinching blow. With the game tied 3 - 3 after 5 innings, the Missionaries blew the game open, loading the bases with no outs. Ozzy Braff’s hit a grounder down the third base line; as the runner sprinted toward the plate, the throw home went wide as the first run scored and another followed for a 5-3 Whitman lead.
Moyes then tripled in two more runs and another run came in later as Whitman opened up an 8 - 3 margin. Moyes had homered in the third inning for a four-RBI effort at the plate.
The teams had traded leads earlier in the game. Connor Savage scored in the first on a grounder from Nate Backes. Moyes’ homer gave Whitman a 2-1 lead in the third.
In the fourth, the Loggers put up two more runs to regain the lead momentarily. JB Eary singled in the first run while Savage’s sacrifice fly regained the Logger lead.
Aaron Cohen’s single in Whitman’s fifth tied the game at 3-3 and set the table for the crucial sixth.
Weeks gave up just 1 earned run on only 5 hits in improving his record to 3 - 1. Will Thompson and Dakota Matherly each pitched an inning of shutout ball to close things out.
The Loggers won the rain delayed second game earlier in the day 5 - 4 (10), before the teams took the field for the series finale. Tied at 4-all, the game was called in the 7th inning Saturday due to rain. When the game resumed, the Missionaries, who had scored 2 in the 7th to tie, had the bases loaded with 2 outs and a 1 - 2 count on the hitter. With one pitch, the Loggers got the strikeout.
Robert Maislin came out of the bullpen to pitch 3 scoreless innings as the game went to extras. In the top of the 10th, Maclean Harned singled up the middle and reached 2nd after a walk but Whitman could not bring him home. The Loggers ended the contest in the bottom half when Jeff Walton led off with a single and later scored on a base knock by Savage.
The Loggers took the opening game of the series on Saturday 4 - 2.
