Union
Club Bylaws I. Purpose The purpose of the
Whitman Civil Liberties Union (WCLU) is to promote the cause of civil liberties
among students, faculty, and staff at Whitman College and to take such
action to further this purpose as is consistent with the policies and regulations
of the ACLU of Washington.
II. Membership 1. The membership of this organization consists of all students, faculty, and staff of Whitman College who support the principles of the American Civil Liberties Union. Voting members are limited to students of Whitman College. 2. Student members
are encouraged to be members of the American Civil Liberties Union.
III. Officers Officers of the WCLU shall be president, vice president, treasurer/secretary, and ASWC (Associated Students of Whitman College) representative. 1. The president shall be responsible for general supervision of the organization's activities and shall be responsible for liaison with the ACLU of Washington affiliate office. 2. The vice president shall work with the president and accept responsibilities for duties delegated by the president. 3. The treasurer/secretary
shall be responsible for taking minutes of each meeting, posting minutes
to the listserv, maintaining the listserv of the organization, and for
handling and accounting for all financial
4. The ASWC representative
shall serve as a liaison between ASWC and the WCLU. Responsibilities include
attendance at all regularly-scheduled ASWC Congress meetings and reporting
to the WCLU on ASWC Congress.
IV. Board The Board of Directors
shall consist of the president, the vice-president, the secretary/treasurer
of the WCLU, and the ASWC representative.
V. Faculty Advisor The Board shall select
a faculty advisor, subject to approval by the members of the WCLU.
VI. Elections The first set of officers
shall be elected at the meeting at which these bylaws are adopted. Thereafter,
elections shall take place one month prior to the end of the school year
and officers shall be elected for a one year term.
VII. Meetings Meetings shall be held
on a regular basis, at least bi-monthly at a time and place set by the
Board of Directors. The president shall send an email reminder to the listserv
at least two days prior to each weekly meeting.
VIII. Financial Transactions 1. Except as noted below, any funds procured by the WCLU are the property of the WCLU and will be handled in compliance with Whitman College regulations. 2. A budget request
shall be submitted annually to the Associated Students of Whitman College
by the secretary/treasurer, developed in conjunction with the other board
members.
IX. Liaison with the ACLU State Office 1. All public positions of the campus branch shall be consistent with the principles of the ACLU of Washington. 2. The officers of the WCLU shall consult with the Public Education Department of the ACLU of Washington in pursuing its activities. 3. As a condition of
its association with the ACLU, the WCLU agrees to comply with ACLU-W regulations
regarding campus branches that shall from time to time be provided to it,
so long as the regulations are not inconsistent with the policies of Whitman
College.
X. Amendments 1. Amendments to these bylaws shall require the approval of a majority of those members present at a WCLU meeting and approval of the Executive Director of the State affiliate. 2. Notice of a meeting
at which amendments will be considered, along with the text of the amendments,
will be sent to all members at least one week in advance of the meeting.
