December 2: fiction writer Aimee Bender
Aimee Bender received her MFA from the University of California,Irvine.
With her provocative collection of short stories, THE GIRL IN
THE FLAMMABLE SKIRT (Doubleday, 1998), Bender made one of the most
exciting
literary debuts of the season. "Declarative and
telegraphic, Bender's stories read like modern fables -- with a healthy
sense of twisted humor thrown in for good measure," said the
VOICE LITERARY SUPPLEMENTED. "Hilarious, deep and a little bit dirty, the
sotries pull you into a fascinating, skewed world," said
HARPER's BAZAAR. Bender's stories have appeared in GRANTA, GQ, STORY,
THE
ANTIOCH REVIEW, and numerous other publications.
She lives in Los Angeles, and is working on a novel. PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY,
in a starred review, said "Bender's perfectly pitched, shapely
writing blurs the lines between prose and poetry... a unique and
compassionate voice."
