Robert Hass

  "Maxey Auditorium, 7:00 p.m. Visiting Writers Reading Series presents former U.S. Poet Laureate, environmentalist and educator Robert Hass who will read from his works. Hass was U.S. Poet Laureate from 1995 to 1997. He used the position to launch an attack on illiteracy, and spent several years speaking to the public, raising money for such things as “Watershed,” a gathering of writers and environmentalists who teach nature writing to inner-city students. Hass, a professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley, has published several books of poetry, including “Sun Under Wood: New Poems”, “Human Wishes”, “Praise”, and “Field Guide”. He has also published a book of essays on poetry, “Twentieth Century Pleasures,” has translated works by Nobel Prize-winning Polish poet Czeslaw Milosz, and edited “Versions of Basho, Buson, and Iss,” and the 2001 edition of “best American Poetry.” He was chosen educator of the year by the North American Association on Environmental Education.
