An Abridged History

Taken from the previous version of the Whitman Ultimate website, we are proud to present a short history of the Sweets until roughly 2002. Stay tuned as our historians work tirelessly to compose a more recent and comprehensive history of the Sweets.

As a college team at a place where people don't tend to stay past four years, not a whole lot is known about our past. If you have been around for more than five years, you start to become an "old" guy. The following is what I know of the Walla Walla Sweets History, which is admittedly, not much. Thanks to Jeremy Miller, class of 1994, for some information on the second (?) establishment of the Whitman ultimate team.

Whitman College had an ultimate team during the 1980's, but it's moniker is not known by the current Sweets. Nor do we know whether they had team discs or where they traveled to play, or even if they traveled to play. On occasion we meet people, usually playing for Master's teams, who informed us that they played at Whitman during the eighties. From hearsay, it is believed that they had "a pretty solid ultimate team at various times during the 80's." (Miller, 2002) It is unknown when *intramural ultimate started, but do to Miller's comments below, it is believed they were going on during the 1980's.

At the start of the 1990's, specifically the school year of '91-92 "there was no club or team, and besides IM's, there was just a small handful of folks that went out to the Sectionals tournament in Missoula each September." (Miller, 2002) Furthermore, Miller points to a "Lack of funds and lack of teams to play were key obstacles" in forming a team. This was all to change in the next few years. {insert epic sounding music here}

By then Spring of 1994, the team had a name, a budget from ASWC (our student body organization), and were going to host the first Onionfest the following Spring. It is believed that the first discs that were made and sold by Whitman ultimate players was in 1992 for Earth Day. Earth Day discs were made in 1993 and 1994 as well. It is believed (by me at least), that the first "official" Walla Walla Sweets disc was made in 1997. The current Sweets website is an updated, slightly modified version of the website created by Andy Neil.

Whitman has begun to play in tournaments outside the Northwest more and more. Most notably the Women's team having traveled to play in UCSD's President's Day college tournament in the Spring of '02, '01, and '00, as well as Stanford in the Spring of '00 and '01. In addition, they are traveling to play in Santa Cruz's tournament in late March 2002. The Men's team has traveled to Baton Rouge to play in a large college day tournaments both in the Spring of '01 and '02. Through these tournaments, both the Men's team and Women's team have been ranked nationally. As a co-ed team, the Sweets traveled this Fall ('01) to play in Humboldt Harvest in Arcadia, CA, driving 12 hours both ways.

*Intramural sports, or IMs, which a high percentage of students are involved in playing, are sports that have teams composed of students, faculty, and staff that make teams to play against each other. Usually teams form around living groups, fraternities/sororities, majors, athletic ability (stacked teams), etc. If you win the IM championship, you win a highly coveted Blue shirt, that proclaims you as a member of the IM Championship team.
