Nominate staff colleagues for the Janice Abraham Award

The Janice Abraham Award, which honors former Tresurer & Chief Financial Officer Janice Abraham, will be given to staff members who have made significant contributions and provided outstanding service to Whitman College.

This is an opportunity to honor and celebrate staff who have gone above and beyond job expectations, brought forward creative and innovative ideas, promoted the philosophy of "customer service" and contributed to the excellence found at Whitman College. Award presentations will be made on June 6, 2014 at the Staff Appreciation Day brunch. A cash award and plaque will be presented to the honorees.

Nominations for the award will be accepted until Friday, May 16 and may be made by any staff member, faculty member or student. One nomination per person only. Nominees must be current Whitman College staff members and must have been employed by the College for two years as of May 16.

Please email your nomination to Administrative Assistant for Human Resources Mary Luckstead at luckstd@whitman.edu. Include the name and department of your nominee and a short paragraph describing why your nominee should receive this award. Please put 'Janice Abraham Award' in the subject line.

Faculty news brief

Associate Professor of Sociology Michelle Janning presented two papers this spring on the intersections of digital technology and romantic relationships, a topic that was the basis of her Louis B. Perry Summer Research Grant last summer with sociology major Emma Snyder '14 on the meaning of handwritten versus digital love letters. The first presentation was with Snyder at the annual meeting of the Pacific Sociological Association in Portland, Ore. The second, "Love Letters Lost? Gender and the Preservation of Digital and Paper Communication from Romantic Relationships," was at a conference on families and digital technology that Janning co-chaired in Miami, Fla. This conference was sponsored by the Council on Contemporary Families, where Janning serves as a board member and senior research fellow. As a result of this work, she was quoted in "Timely Matters: Technological and Societal Changes Reshape Families and Lifestyles" by Tonya McMurrayan, an article in the Summer 2014 issue of "Natural Living Magazine."
