Becoming a Peer Listener

Becoming a Peer Listener is easy! In order to become a Peer Listener, all that is required is being trained by any of the Peer Listener leaders. Topics covered in the training are:

  • Basic Listening and Communication Skills
  • Attentive/Active Listening
  • Types of Questions
  • Problem Solving
  • Confidentiality
  • Referral/Resource Management
  • Special Topics including Suicide, Depression, and Sexual Misconduct

After you have been trained, we simply ask that you are available in your living area to be a resource for all of your peers. In the past we have held office hours in our office inside the Counseling Center, however we have postponed the scheduling of office hours until further notice. Also, the group meets once a week to plan programming, hang out, and do practice listening sessions. Again, all listeners are invited to participate in and plan these programs, but they are not required activities.

If you are interested in becoming a Peer Listener, or if you would like additional information, please contact us.
