Description of Organization: GEAR UP prepares and encourages students to enter and succeed in college by providing:

For Students:

  • Early interventions beginning in middle school
  • Tutoring during and after school
  • Enriched technology-based curriculum, especially in reading, writing, and math
  • Campus visits
  • Motivational speakers
  • Support from middle school through high school
  • Scholarship assistance for select students

For Parents:

  • ESL, GED, and Citizenship classes
  • Leadership training
  • Facilitating grass-roots community development
  • Educational classes on topics including: courses required for college, college entrance exams, helping your child pass the WASL, setting high academic expectations for your children
  • Workshops on: paying for college, applying for college and financial aid, writing the college application essay, and selecting a college

For Teachers:

  • Staff development in areas such as ESL and reading endorsement
  • Class room technology and curriculum

Position Title: Tutor

Description of position: Provide academic assistance to students in math, reading, technology, science. Tutors will provide outreach services to student to include providing; individual tutoring and academic advising; mentoring; With the direction of the site manager provide coordinate activities on a variety of educational topics including career planning; college admission, student financial aid, etc; field trips to post secondary institutions and to educational and cultural events; service-learning activities; access to high quality computers and cutting edge software; involvement of parent and/or other family sponsors; portfolio program in the extended day program and in the regular school curriculum including electronic portfolio development. Will work in classroom, tutor center and one-on-one situations with students along with faculty and school administration. Other duties include chaperoning on college campus trips. Work with and understand the needs of students from varied racial ethnic populations. Exhibit appropriate professionalism and demeanor. Serve as an effective role model. Demonstrate empathy and be genuine with students. Work collaborative with staff.

Skills/Background: Organizational skills, and development of business skills within the environment. Customer service and tutoring skills and work force experience.

Wage: Minimum to 14.00 DOQ

Number of Hours: 19 a week
