Founded before the turn of 20th century, The Pioneer is Whitman College's weekly, student-run newspaper. With a circulation of over 1,200, The Pioneer serves both the Whitman College student body and its network of faculty, staff, parents and alumni as well as the local Walla Walla community.
In addition to publishing a weekly issue of the latest news, arts and sports coverage and student editorials, The Pioneer publishes several special editions, including Family Weekend, Commencement and Jack issues.
The Pioneer is entirely student-run and serves as an open forum for the student body as well as an outlet for gaining journalistic experience at a school that has no journalism program. The staff receives guidance from a Board of Advisors, a group of campus and community leaders, including Whitman College faculty and staff with journalism expertise as well as members of the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin. The Pioneer strives to maintain the highest standers of fairness, quality and journalistic integrity and is governed by a Code of Ethics, part of the full Governing Documents of The Pioneer.
