Thursday, January 16

Reid Campus Center Hours:

The Financial Aid Office is open if you have questions.

9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.               Business Office Open, Memorial 233.
All bills must be paid or other financial arrangements made before you can get Business Office clearance for final registration. 

1-3 p.m.                            *New Student Check-In/MATRICULATION TASKS, Reid Campus Center Information Desk.
Check-in at the Reid Campus Center Information Desk to pick up your new student packet and then complete the following matriculation tasks.

  • Photo ID Card, Memorial Building, room 137
  • Post Office Mailbox, Reid Campus Center, ground floor


1-3 p.m.                            HEALTH CENTER OPEN, Welty Center, 11 Merriam Street
Your TD screen, immunization form and on-line (Quack) insurance enrollment/waiver must be completed and submitted to the Health Center to clear your account.

2-3 p.m.                            Campus Tour, Penrose House.
Take a walk through the Whitman College campus with a student guide. The tour leaves from Penrose House, 515 Boyer.

3-5 p.m.                            *Residence Hall Check-In
Residence halls are open for new students to check-in. 

6-9p.m.                             NIGHT @ rEID, Reid Campus Center Coffeehouse.
Join us for a fiesta dinner, followed by fun and games such as movies, karaoke and/or board games.  This will be your first chance to meet the other new January start students, as well as several returning 'former' January start students.

Friday, January 17

9-10:30 a.m.                      *Welcome to Whitman College, Kimball Auditorium, Hunter. Conservatory.
A 'meet and mingle' breakfast will precede welcoming remarks from President George Bridges, Provost/Dean of Faculty Tim Kaufman-Osborn, and Dean of Students Chuck Cleveland.

10:45-11:45 a.m.               *Student Panel Discussion, Kimball Auditorium, Hunter Conservatory.
What is it really like to be a January start student?  Come ask questions of our student panel, all former January starts themselves, and find out!

 Noon-1:15 p.m.                *Welcome Lunch for New Students and Families, Reid Campus Center Coffeehouse
New students and their families are invited to join academic  advisers and administrators for a complimentary lunch.

1:30-2:15 p.m.                   *GROUP ADVISING, Reid Campus Center 207.
This session is designed to provide new students with crucial information regarding college policies, advising and registration.

2:30-3:45 p.m.                  *ACADEMIC ADVISING, advisers' offices.
New students will meet individually with their academic adviser to discuss classes and review their spring semester schedule. 

4-4:30 p.m.                       *LIBRARY ORIENTATION, Penrose Library foyer.
New students will participate in an orientation and tour of the Penrose Library. Please bring your Whitman ID card with you so you can be cleared for library access/use.

5-6:15 p.m.                       Dinner, Reid Campus Center Café.

7:30-8:30 p.m.                     *"CONSENT," Reid Campus Center 110. 
Consent is asking for and receiving clear communication in all intimate situations.  While consent is sexy, it can also be confusing and awkward.  This student to student session focuses on the ins and outs of consent at Whitman, including the need to practice communication and consent skills.

9-11 p.m.                           Sweet Putt Mini-Golf. 
Join us for an evening of indoor golf and a variety of arcade games!  Meet outside Reid Campus Center for the min-golf shuttle!

Encounters professor Chetna Chopra will lead this preliminary session for new students registered for Encounters (General Studies 146). *This session is required only for students enrolled in General Studies 146.

1:30-2:30 p.m.                  *NEW STUDENT BOOK DISCUSSION FACULTY PANEL, Reid Campus Center 207. Christopher Leise, Assistant Professor of English, Brooke Vick, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Christopher Wallace, Dr. Robert F. Welty Associate Professor of Biology, will share their unique, discipline-specific perspectives on your assigned reading, "Whistling Vivaldi" by Claude M. Steele.  This session will provide a brief introduction to the intellectual community at Whitman and serve as a springboard for the engaging book discussion to follow.

2:30-3:30 p.m.                  *NEW STUDENT BOOK DISCUSSION.
New students will discuss "Whistling Vivaldi" by Claude M. Steele with a student academic adviser.
 
3:45-5 p.m.                        Downtown Stroll w/Coffee and Hot Chocolate, Reid Campus Center Foyer.  Stroll through downtown Walla Walla with our final destination being coffee and hot chocolate at one of the local haunts.

5-7 p.m.                             Dinner, Reid Campus Center Café.

7:30-8 p.m.                       * GREEN DOT: IT'S WHAT WE DO, Reid Campus Center 110.  
Green Dot, Whitman College's sexual violence prevention program, identifies individual safety as a community responsibility.  Students have the ability to reduce incidents of sexual assault by learning how to be Green Dot bystanders! 2 p.m. PARENTS ORIENTATION ENDS. Thank you for attending!

Members of the residence life staff will review information on residence hall life and introduce you to the staff.

The indoor climbing facility is a popular spot for Whitman rock climbers of all ability levels.  Join us for snacks and a chance to test our impressive bouldering wall!

Wondering where to rent outdoor gear or who to talk to about community service in Walla Walla?  This campus wide quest with your spring SA and other January start students will help you discover the offices and people that can answer these and the many other questions that will arise as you get situated to learning and living at Whitman.

Meet in the Reid Campus Center Ballroom for a candlelight peace march in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. The march will begin and end at the Reid Campus Center. A brief ceremony will occur in downtown Walla Walla before the march returns to campus.

5:30 p.m.                         MLK JR. DAY RECEPTION, Reid Campus Center Coffeehouse.
Meet in the Reid Campus Center Coffeehouse for the post-march reception. Refreshments will be provided.

8p.m.                                *"VOICES OF WHITMAN," Jewett Main Lounge.
Current students will reflect on their college experiences, sharing with you how Whitman has shaped them, and in turn, how they have shaped Whitman in this celebration of diverse perspectives that define the college.  A discussion will follow the "Voices of Whitman" presentation.

Come and see what ways you can get involved!  Clubs, the Outdoor Program, service opportunities, and more will be available to discuss their organizations and have sign ups and more information.
