Philanthropy

We at the Gamma Epsilon chapter continually strive to give back to the greater Walla Walla community which we are a part of.  Each year we have two large philanthropy events to raise money for specific local organizations, as well as many smaller volunteer events.  We also participate in all campus philanthropy events, such as the Mr. Whitman Competition.

The Run For Color

As a first time event, the Run For Color will undoubtedly become a spring tradition for the Gamma Epsilon chapter.  The Run For Color is a 5k charity run around the Whitman College campus, with Sigs stationed along the way throwing powdered paint at runners.  All ages participated, ranging from Professors to kindergarteners and everyone in between.  All in all, nearly $3000 was raised, with the money being donated to two causes.  Some of the proceeds were donated to a Whitman student struggling to pay her medical bills after a car accident.  The rest of the money was donated to art programs at Walla Walla public schools.  As a first-time event, the Run For Color was hugely successful, and will hopefully raise even more money in the future.

The Wine Auction

The Sigma Chi Wine Auction is a long standing philanthropy event held every fall semester.  This years Wine Auction raised $2600 for the Walla Walla Helpline, an organization committed to providing emergeny social services for poor families in the greater Walla Walla area.

Other Philanthropy Events

Throughout the year active members frequently volunteer for smaller philanthropy events.  These include dog walking at the Humane Society, trail restoration, painting a Walla Walla elementary school for Whitman's "Make a Difference Day," and many more.  These events are very rewarding for Sigs and work well in conjunction with the larger philanthropy events.  The larger events help us raise money to give to local organizations, whereas these smaller events allow us to go into the community and interact with people on a smaller, more intimate scale.
