- Sigma Delta Pi, a national Spanish honorary society, established the Xi Nu chapter at Whitman in 1981. It is open to students who attain excellence in the study of the Spanish language and in the study of the literature and culture of the Hispanic world. The chapter closed in 2006, following the retirement of Professor Celia Weller.

- "Landmarks in 20th Century Mexican Prose" -- Special Studies course in World Literature (388), 2nd semester, 1986-87. Sponsored by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Project. This course focused on major Mexican writers of this century who share the complex heritage of revolutionary and post-revolutionary Mexico. Their works were analyzed with emphasis on the unique ways they express Mexican historical and political reality, including the pervasive and continuing issue of agrarian reform.
