Semester in the West is like no other academic experience and requires a certain breed of student to make it work. You have to love the outdoors. You have to be willing to work closely with others for extended periods of time. You have to be prepared to study in the rain, sleep through the wind, and enjoy the solace of the West's open spaces.

The program is offered every two years in the fall semester (August-December). Information about the program will be posted during the preceding spring term, and there will be a number of meetings for interested students at which application deadlines will be announced. Applications will be read by a panel of professors who may require individual interviews with applicants. To facilitate course planning, applicants should know if they have been accepted well prior to registration for the fall term.
Only Whitman College students are eligible to apply.

There will be several meetings during the spring semester to help prepare admitted students for the program. We will use these meetings to get to know each other, discuss the curriculum, gear, and any concerns that students might have.
