Jim Hanson (Chair)

Professor, Ph.D., University of Southern California

Jim joined the department in 1992. He is the Director of Forensics, NDT Ranking Director and NPTE Treasurer. His areas of interest are political and legal rhetoric, argumentation and debate, and contemporary rhetorical theory and criticism. He has written Breaking Down Barriers: How to Debate, The Dictionary of Forensics, and Argument in Context. E-mail Jim at hansonjb@whitman.edu

Jim is usually in his office afternoons and evenings except when he is at debate tournaments.

 

 

 

Heather Hayes

Assistant Neilen-Anderson Professor, A.B.D., University of Minnesota.

Heather joins the department in 2013. Her research focuses on post 9/11 discourse, the rationales given for the use of drones, as well as Arab world rhetoric, class and materialism. She has co-authored “Rhetorical Materialism and the Social Dimensions of Argument.” She teaches courses in social justice such as the Rhetoric of Hip Hop, Weapons of the State, and “the 47%” as rhetorical materialism. She also teaches the Introduction to Rhetoric and Public Culture course open to all students interested in rhetoric including majoring in our department.

Patrick Belanger

Visiting Assistant Professor, Ph.D., University of Southern California.

Patrick joined the department in 2011. His research and teaching are centered in the field of critical/cultural rhetoric – the art of practical reason, and grounds for mutual understanding and ethical civic participation. Concerned with how diverse publics come together to solve deep social problems, he researches the intersection of dialogue, culture, and power in the context of globalization. His current work engages the politics of Indigenous reconciliation in colonial societies. He is a Fulbright and SSHRC fellow. Matt deTar

Visiting Assistant Professor, Ph.D., Northwestern University.

Matt joined the department in 2012. His research focuses broadly on rhetorical theory and discourse theory, with a focus on nationalism, ethics, political identity and the relationship between communication and cultural difference. His work has appeared in Advances in the History of Rhetoric and the essay collection "History, Politics and Foreign Policy in Turkey," and has been funded by the Roberta Buffett Center for International and Comparative Studies and the Institute for Turkish Studies. Bob Withycombe

Professor, Ph.D., University of Oregon

Bob joined the department in 1980, finished full time teaching in Spring 2011 but continues to assist the program. He is the former Department Chair, Humanities Division Chair, C.E.D.A. National President, and Associate Dean of Faculty. His areas of interest are persuasion, social movements, civil rights rhetoric and rhetorical theory.
