Practice and Present!

When you are to the step of actually presenting, be sure there is nothing you are doing that detracts from your content in any way. Practicing your delivery and presentation is the best way to do this.

Do you have a fear of speaking? Check this out: Overcome your Fears!

Practice in front of a friend, in front of a mirror, or use videotape to critique yourself afterwards.  Be on the watch for superfluous hand gestures, pacing, swaying back and forth, and the most dreaded “and” or “um” that distract your audience. Know who your audience is and what they expect: can you use informal language? What sort of style should you use? Should you dress up? Should you be prepared to present source citations? These are all factors that should be considered while practicing your presentation.

While practice is always important, it is doubly so when using visual aids, such as posters, overhead projectors, audio and video tape, and PowerPoint presentations. Any sort of addition to your presentation can go unexpectedly awry without ample practice.

This speaker practices her presentation. Practicing at least once makes a dramatic difference in the quality of your presentation because you can correct all kinds of little and big problems in your speech.
