2B4. YOU’LL MOVE INTO YOUR PERMANENT ROOM AT THE END OF THE PREP SESSION
At the end of the Prep Session, you will check in officially with your fall semester residence hall staff. At this time, you will check out of Douglas Hall.
NOTE—JIM HAS NOT ABSOLUTELY
CONFIRMED THIS INFORMATION. HE WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED AS THE SCHOOL CONFIRMS THE
SETUP.
3. EVERYONE: SPEECH-DEBATE
MATERIALS YOU SHOULD BRING
3A. BRING MATERIALS YOU HAVE:
DEBATE BACKFILES: Contact Jim about which backfiles to bring. Usually it is stuff directly relevant to the topic or good generic stuff that the team does not currently have. NOTE: We do not allow our debaters to use HS backfiles unless you do article checks with our assistant coach (thus allowing the file to be used). The backfiles can also be used for source citations.
3B. WE ALSO HOPE YOU’LL BRING A LAPTOP.
WANT A MAC? That’s fine—you just won’t get full tech support from Jim as he is not a Mac person.
EVERYONE: We will have 19 PC desktops and 2-3 laptops for the team but during the prep session, we often come up short.
4. EVERYONE: FOOD DURING THE
PREP SESSION
We will provide lunch and dinner each day. All other food is your responsibility.
5. WHAT WE WILL DO AT THE PREP
SESSION
We will discuss arguments on the new topic; you’ll prepare affirmative cases, disadvantages, kritiks, and counterplans; you’ll discuss partners with us; you’ll engage in practice drills and debates; you’ll meet this year’s team; we’ll set goals for the year; and you’ll have fun playing frisbee and watching movies.
SEE THE SCHEDULE schedule-policy.htm

6. PREPARING FOR THE PREP
SESSIONS
Aaron, Eric and/or Jim will be contacting you about the new topic and any research areas we think should be completed.
EARLY JUNE: Typically, we have some broad assignments set in early June after the possible resolutions are announced.
EARLY AUGUST: Aaron will setup the first assignments and some specific research assignments after the resolution is announced in late July including, in particular, returning students complete a case, disad, counterplan, and kritik for drills (that’s completion of one case, DA, CP, and K as a whole, not one for each returning student).
6B. FOR PARLI-IE STUDENTS: WORK ON A STRATEGIC
CASE OVER THE SUMMER
Keep in contact with Mike and/or Jim about a good case and keep up on the news!
6C. FOR THOSE NEW TO FORENSICS
We’re here to work with you. We know college speech and debate is going to be a new experience for you and that you’re probably both a bit apprehensive and excited about meeting a whole new group of people. Cool. We welcome you to the team and hope that we’ll make the adjustment easier. If you wish to get involved in preparing cases, just contact me, Jim, at hansonjb@whitman.edu
If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to email me at hansonjb@whitman.edu
