THE POINT SYSTEM

The Northwest Sweepstakes System counts points for Northwest Schools from any Northwest tournament for

Parliamentary debate, Interp, and Speaking events, and any West Coast/Rockies tournament for Policy and NFA-LD debate.

·        Tournaments must have at least 6 total debate rounds (eg 4 prelims with 2 elims).

·        Tournaments must have at least 3 total rounds of an individual event to count (e.g. 2 prelims and finals) except in an individual event with 2 preliminary rounds that does not have enough contestants to justify a final round.

THERE ARE SEVEN CATEGORIES in which schools are recognized for their top 4 performances in:

·        POLICY

·        PARLI

·        DEBATE OVERALL

·        INTERP

·        SPEAKING EVENTS

·        IES OVERALL

·        OVERALL

WE RECOGNIZE 4 YEAR and CC SCHOOLS IN EACH CATEGORY.

Recognition is via announcement of school placings on our web page. If you wish a trophy, Jim Hanson would be glad to order you one at cost.

DEBATE POINTS

If a team advances to the first elim (or going ABOVE 50% win-loss): 6 points

The team gets 1 point for each elim win

Multiply the above points using this scale:

2 teams in a division times .1
3 or 4 teams in a division times .2
5 or 6 teams in a division times .3
7 or 8 teams in a division times .4
9 or 10 teams in a division times .5
11 or 12 teams in a division times .6
13 or 14 teams in a division times .7
15 or 16 teams in a division times .8

after that, add .01 for each team over 16 except the number should never exceed 1.
For example, if there are 25 teams in junior parli—times .89

FOR A TOURNAMENT—TOURNAMENT POLICY DEBATE SCORE: Each School counts their top 4 scoring teams in policy debate at a tournament.

FOR A TOURNAMENT—TOURNAMENT PARLI DEBATE SCORE: Each School counts their top 4 scoring teams in parli debate at a tournament.

OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR—A SCHOOL’S POLICY DEBATE POINTS: Each School counts the top 4 tournament scores in policy debate

OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR—A SCHOOL’S PARLI DEBATE POINTS: Each School counts their top 4 tournament scores in parli debate.

OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR—A SCHOOL’S OVERALL DEBATE POINTS: Each School counts their top 4 policy and top 4 parli tournament scores.

IE POINTS

If a student advances to elims (or averaging 2 or less in prelims): 3 points
3rd: 1 extra point
2nd: 2 extra points
1st: 3 extra points

BUT NOTE:

1. No more than the top 6 competitors can count in a division (e.g. a finals with 7 or more competitors—no points are counted for 7th place).

Example: There are 16 competitors; 8 advance to finals. You still only count the top 6 winners.

2. If there are less than 12 competitors in a division, then only half the competitors can count in that division.

Example: There are 9 competitors; 5 advance to finals. You only count the top 4 winners (5 is more than half of the competitors).

3. If there are no finals—count the top half of competitors up to the top 6.

Example: There are 11 competitors and no finals. You count the top 5 placing competitors.

Multiply the above points using this scale:

2 ie entries in that event and division times .2
3 ie entries in that event and division times .3
4 ie entries in that event and division times .4
5 ie entries in that event and division times .5
6 ie entries in that event and division times .6
7 or 8 ie entries in that event and division times .7
9 or 10 ie entries in that event and division times .8

after that, add .01 for each ie slot in that event and division over 10 except the number should never exceed 1.
For example, if there are 25 ie slots in novice impromptu—times .95

FOR A TOURNAMENT—TOURNAMENT INTERP SCORE: Each School counts their top 8 IE Points in Interp at a tournament.

FOR A TOURNAMENT—TOURNAMENT PARLI DEBATE SCORE: Each School counts their top 8 IE Points in Speaking Events at a tournament.

OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR—A SCHOOL’S INTERP POINTS: Each School counts the top 4 tournament scores in interp.

OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR—A SCHOOL’S SPEAKING EVENT POINTS: Each School counts their top 4 tournament scores in speaking events.

OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR—A SCHOOL’S OVERALL INDIVIDUAL EVENT POINTS: Each School counts their top 4 interp and top 4 speaking event tournament scores.

OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR—A SCHOOL’S OVERALL POINTS: Each School counts their top 4 interp, top 4 speaking event, top 4 policy debate, and top 4 parli debate tournament scores.
