Team membership and tournament competition provide a fun and interesting way to work on these important aspects of career and personal growth. It is our goal to provide the student with a maximum of these exciting educational experiences, balancing them with a cautious eye toward the excesses sometimes found in competitve forensics environments. To complement the learning experiences offered by tournament participation, the Baker Forensics Program seeks opportunities for student presentations and public leadership among the wider campus community and through service projects beyond the campus boundaries. Team members are expected to maintain a 2.5 minimum GPA in their coursework.

Bethel is one of only eight schools in the nation to qualify for the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament each year since its inception in 1977. In addition, our parliamentary debate teams have consistently earned national ranking in season sweepstakes and
advancement to elimination rounds at the national tournament. We see participation in both debate and forensics as integral to the students’ overall development as effective communicators. Thus students are encouraged to compete in both activities.
In addition to offering performance scholarships for qualified students, Bethel fully funds travel and

Bethel College is a Christian learning community whose goal is to foster an effective academic program and to create a supportive environment for the development of growing Christian persons. The college, along with Bethel Seminary, forms a single institution to meet the educational needs of the churches of the Baptist General Conference and of the wider evangelical Christian community. Bethel seeks to serve society on the local, national, and international levels through scholarship, social service, and Christian leadership. Learning at Bethel promotes self-knowledge, appreciation of intellectual and cultural heritage, evaluation and understanding of physical and societal surroundings, exercise of critical judgment, creative communication of ideas, effective cooperation with others, and establishment of lifelong learning habits. Such learning is basic to all academic programs. Christian faith is viewed as relevant to all facets of human knowledge and experience; it is thus the integrative principle for the entire curriculum. Bethel has nearly 2,700 students, with bachelor’s and master’s degrees (including a master’s degree in communication). Bethel is a residential campus with approximately 70 percent of the traditional undergraduates living in college housing. We are located just north of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Bethel’s forensics team is grounded in an educational philosophy and works for two constituencies while serving the overall purposes of the college. The team meets the needs of the Department of Communication by engaging in practical learning, where students in several departmental courses compete in forensics. In addition, we serve to meet the needs of the college as a whole by encouraging all students to refine and enhance their abilities in public speaking, while learning more about other people and the world in general. Bethel Forensics is open to all majors, and students are welcomed with or without previous high school experience. Through the connection with communication department courses, the Bethel team serves approximately 100-125 students per year, with an additional 25 students who are highly active. Bethel attends approximately 20-25 tournaments per year throughout the Upper Midwest and nationally. Bethel’s team is a part of both the forensic and the Christian community, and we seek to be positive examples of the work that God is doing through each member of the team.

The College of Southern Idaho has a rich tradition in forensics dating back 30 years to the early 1970’s. Those thirty years have been distinguished by more than 100 regional awards and more than 20 trophies for competition at national tournaments. CSI belongs to three major forensics organizations. The first, Phi Rho Pi, is a national association of more than 100 junior colleges with active forensics programs. CSI is also an active member of the Northwest Forensics Conference. This association of almost 40 colleges and universities from Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Alaska holds four regional tournaments each year and crowns a regional champion in both a university and a junior college division each year. In 1998-99 CSI won the junior college division and placed higher than all but four of the universities, placing fifth overall. Finally, CSI belongs to Pi Kappa Delta, the oldest forensics honorary in the nation. CSI travels to approximately seven tournaments per year throughout the Northwest and often attends the Phi Rho Pi and Pi Kappa Delta National Tournaments.
The College of Southern Idaho annaully awards more than $5,000 in scholarships to deseving forensics students.

Concordia Forensics is dedicated to the goal of being an “open” program. The program strives to provide a wide variety of experiences appropriate to a wide variety of educational needs. We aim to provide any student who is willing to work toward improvement, regardless of prior experience, with experiences appropriate to the student’s goals. Thus, Concordia Forensics is committed to meeting both the needs of students with no high
school experience and those who aspire to be national level competitors. Consistent with that commitment, top level competitors from the program
participate in a nationally competitive travel schedule. Last year Concordia students both won a championship at the American Forensic Associations’ National Individual Events Tournament (NIET) and qualified a team for elimination rounds at the National Debate Tournament (NDT).
Scholarships are awarded to some incoming students through a competitive process. Contact the Concordia Admissions Office:
http://www.cord.edu/dept/admissions/ Many Concordia competitors also receive financial support from the colleges academic scholarship program, the “Faculty Scholars Program.” However, most Concordia competitors are not “on scholarship.” Many of our top competitors have been students who did not receive a merit scholarship.

The ECU speech and debate program extends the communication curriculum in ways classroom
experiences cannot replicate. Our program is open to all students regardless of their level of previous experience or achievement, because we feel that everyone can benefit from the educational opportunities provided by competitive speech and debate activities. The goal of our program is
learning; what our students win through competition (in addition to trophies and plaques) are lessons they can apply throughout their lives. We travel to tournaments so we can compete in debate and individual events. We host a variety of intercollegiate, intramural, and club events. We participate in ECU’s annual interscholastic meet. We also participate in a variety of college and departmental activities. We
provide service and leadership for other forensics professionals and organizations
The A. Linscheid and D.J. Nabors scholarships are awarded annually to students active in the speech and debate program. Through the Communication Department our Board of Regents also awards fee waiver grants to students who meet minimal GPA and program activity standards. All awards are based on the applicant’s level of participation (not level of success), working relationship with faculty and peers, and educational achievement. The university president is kind enough to waive a portion of out-of-state tuition for program participants.
