Reading Postings and Going to your Rounds

WHEN

Postings go up almost always at or before the time noted in the schedule.

WHERE

Postings are in front of the Cordiner building across the street from Reid. Cordiner is a large, concrete building.

Policy postings will also be available in the Olin Foyer.

HOW TO READ DEBATE POSTINGS

Debate postings list the affirmative team/debater on the left side; the negative team/debater on the right side. For example:

CENTENNIAL BK    VASHON ISLAND TT        OLIN 212     JONES, K.

Centennial BK is affirmative. Vashon Island TT is negative. The round is in Olin 212. K. Jones is the judge.

BE SURE TO GET TO YOUR ROUND ON-TIME. THE POSTING WILL TELL YOU THE LATEST POSSIBLE TIME YOU CAN BEGIN THE 1AC BEFORE FORFEITING. GET THERE WELL AHEAD OF THAT TIME!

TAKE A COPY OF THE POSTING—AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE HEADED TO THE RIGHT ROOM—DOUBLE CHECK!!!!

PLEASE KEEP QUIET IN BUILDINGS—AVOID INTERFERING WITH STUDENTS IN THEIR RESIDENCES AND WITH CLASSES!

My name isn’t on the posting

Doublecheck it.

Tell our staff at the ballot table.

The debate posting says I have a ‘bye’

That means that you are not scheduled to debate.

Please go to the Reid Center ballroom and tell the ballot table people that you have a bye AFTER ALL OR NEARLY ALL BALLOTS HAVE BEEN GIVEN OUT.

We may be able to place you into a debate.

I’m in LD or Parli. What is this flight A and flight B stuff?

Flight A means your debate occurs during the first part of the round.

Flight B means your debate occurs during the second part of the round.

The posting will tell you your start times.

I’m double or triple entered in individual events.

Which round do I go to first?

Go first to the round that you are scheduled to speak sooner. So, if you are second speaker in oratory and fourth speaker in dramatic interp, go to your oratory round first, then to your dramatic interp.

If you are first or second extemp speaker, do that first. If you are fourth or fifth speaker in extemp, do your other individual event first. If you are third speaker, you’ll need to make a judgment call.

If you are in parliamentary debate—go to that first if you are in Flight A. Go to that second if you are in Flight B. DO NOT BE LATE TO YOUR PARLI ROUND or you will forfeit the round.

Be sure to leave the round right after you have spoken and go to your other event as soon as possible.

Going to your Rounds

How to find my room

Keep a map.

Feel free to ask our staff or a tournament guide for directions. There is a tournament guide at Cordiner near the posting or in the Extemp Prep Room in the north basement, Sherwood small gym, and Olin.

I’m at the building but can’t find my room

Ask a college student, staff, or faculty member. Ask one of our guides—they are located in the first floor of Olin, near the Sherwood small gym, and periodically in Cordiner Foyer.

Noone is at my room

Double-check to make sure it is the right room.

If it is the right room and noone is there 10 minutes after the start of the round, head back to Reid center and tell the ballot table.

Our judge hasn’t shown

If the tournament is running late/ballots are going out late, give a little slack for the judge’s arrival.

If its 10 minutes past when the round should have started, all involved competitors should return to Reid center and tell the ballot table. We will get you another judge and room.

The room is locked

Tell one of our guides located in the Olin Foyer or Sherwood small gym or come to Reid Ballroom and tell the ballot table.

Can we just hold our round in another room nearby?

You can do this ONLY if you will not in any way interfere with others and you clearly post a sign right next to the original room where you have gone to so other competitors know where to go.

BE SURE TO TELL THE REID BALLOT TABLE PEOPLE about any locked rooms as soon as possible so we can get the rooms unlocked.

Make sure you are in the correct room

Confirm with your judge that you are supposed to be competing in the room.

Don't speak or debate in a room/against someone you're not supposed to unless the tournament

director says to.

The End of the Round

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT LET A JUDGE HOLD YOU to explain a decision or whatever when that will make you late to the next round!!! YOU WILL LOSE YOUR NEXT ROUND AS A RESULT. You are obligated to politely tell the judge that you MUST leave and go to your next round.

HEY—AT THE END OF YOUR ROUND, Be sure to CLEAN UP!

WHEN DO ELIM POSTINGS GO UP? SATURDAY MORNING—FOR ALL EVENTS.
