Hi
Please
read through the below and then do as it requests at the end of this page.
This
assures we are on the same page for what is expected of you with your work for
the high school tournament.
|
In
case of emergencies during the tournament |
·
If you have a minor injury call Security at 5777.
·
If you have a serious problem--call 911--to do this from a residence
hall you must dial 7-911; from an academic building, you must dial 9-911.
·
Note--if you need to get to a phone--the Residence Hall doors are open
except late at night and there are phones there. There are also phones by the outdoor tennis
courts.
·
Report any emergencies to
Jim as soon as possible.

Being
at the tournament at all times |
1. When you leave—please inform Jim. Why? So he knows and in case there is an emergency so
we can use you if need be or so we can adjust with the knowledge you are gone.
2. MAKE SURE you will get up in the morning. SLEEP NEAR A PHONE EACH
NIGHT OF THE TOURNAMENT—YOUR CELL PHONE OR THE PHONE THAT HAS IT’S PHONE NUMBER IN THE WHITMAN PHONE BOOK (so we can call
you). Set your alarm. PLEASE BE ON TIME.

Be
helpful |
Be willing to help out
Be sure to be there when your job is assigned. Check your e-mail for
reminders that Jim sends out.
When
you are asked to do something, do it. If you have a suggestion, offer it
quickly and courteously. If your idea is rejected, smile and just go for what
you've been told to do. There is almost always a reason why you are asked to do
something even the boring, rote tasks.
Jim is under huge amounts of
pressure—time wise, pressure from students, coaches, team members, the tab
rooms, etc. He needs your help and even more so—he just needs people that show
empathy and support. Please offer it.
NOTE: WHEN THE TOURNAMENT ASSISTANT
ASKS YOU TO DO TOURNAMENT RELATED WORK, YOU ARE EXPECTED TO DO IT AS IF JIM WAS
TELLING YOU TO DO IT.

Good
Relations and Judging |
1.
Be super nice to coaches, judges and students from the schools.
We want to make a good impression. Ditto
with Whitman faculty and staff.
2. Don't
make statements over which you do not have authority.
Before you tell a team a ''rule," what the novice case list is, etc.
read it directly off our tournament invitation or an official sheet that Jim
has made. Otherwise, tell whoever it is that you're sorry, Jim will have to get
back to them.
3. Offer
lots of helpful comments to speakers and debaters you judge.
Avoid negative, attacking comments. Avoid giving really low speaker
points; follow the Whitman speaker points system noted on your ballots. You are
making an impression about our squad and school.
4. Please
no offensive joking.
Please skip college style irony and joking during the tournament.
5. You may NOT
hang out with high schoolers in the evening without
Jim’s permission
It creates the possibility of problems, rumors, and more.
6. No
intoxication during the tournament
OBVIOUSLY, DRINKING WITH HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENTS WOULD DUMB; ditto with the use of other substances.
7.
Whitman's tournament is the best and you folks make it the best.
We are a Semis TOC qualifier in LD and Finals TOC qualifier in Policy;
Coach surveys of the tournament indicate very high satisfaction; Students
repeatedly comment on how nice the tournament staff and judges are, Whitman
student judges are highly prized as critics; LET'S KEEP THIS GREAT TRADITION
GOING!
