I'm very glad to have you on board for this year's tournament.

In your job, it is important that you be nice, helpful, and supportive to the kids who are preparing for extemp at the same time you make sure that the preparation rules are adhered to.

YOU SHOULD BE IN THE HUNTER FOYER AT 7:45am on Friday.

You will get topics and postings from me, Jim.

FRIDAY MORNING, AT 7:45AM, POST ROUND 1 OF IE’S

FRIDAY MORNING AT 7:45AM, GET THE EXTEMP TOPICS FROM JIM AND BEGIN POSTING THEM IN THE EXTEMP PREP ROOM.

The Extemp Prep Room is Cordiner Basement West (it is the basement area underneath the stage—you have to enter using the doors on the side of Cordiner (the doors facing Reid):

IN THE EXTEMP PREP ROOM, CORDINER BASEMENT WEST UNDERNEATH THE STAGE

1. Post the Jr and Sr Extemp Posting (eg names of students and what room they go to) in an easy to see location.

2. Post Extemp Topics in 10 minute intervals beginning at the following times:

HIGH SCHOOL TOURNAMENT

Friday

8:10 a.m.

9:50 a.m.

6:50 p.m.

Saturday

10:40 a.m.

3. When you post, do it every 10 minutes (not every 7 minutes!):

State loudly "Speaker Number X"

Tape the Extemp Topics for that Speaker Number in Cordiner West Basement in an easy access spot—right next to the Jr/Sr Extemp Posting sheets.

SO—AT 8:10AM, POST FIRST SPEAKER. At 8:20am, post the second speaker. Etc.

4. KEEP CONTROL IN THE EXTEMP ROOM

· You need to make sure that students stay in the Extemp Area (Cordiner West Basement) until about ten minutes before their round starts.

· Don’t be a Nazi but show some control.

· STOP Students who are talking: SAY OUTLOUD TO STUDENTS “You need to be quiet in the extemp room.” Conferring/Coaching is against the rules.

· STOP Students from getting tips from coaches or other coaches. “No conferring with others.” “Conferring/Coaching is against the rules.”
