ENTER THESE REGION
NUMBERS ON THE SCHOOLS SPREADSHEET PAGE (PUT THE NUMBER IN THE SCHOOLS REGION
COLUMN)
REMEMBER-ROUND 2 LD happens on its own. Round 3 LD
and 2 Policy happen at same time. Policy 3 happens on its own.
THIS MEANS THAT JUDGE AND ROOM NEEDS ARE AT DIFFERENT TIMES.
Also, Round 2 OF LD is single flighted AND IT USES POLICY JUDGES!
POWERMATCHING
Rd 1 and 2 Pairing to avoid hitting teams from the same
region
BEFORE
PAIRING ROUND 3—TURN OFF REGIONAL CONSTRAINTS IN THE TOURNAMENT SETTINGS!
Rd 3, High-High (off of Rd. 1-2 for policy and parli; off of
round 1 if possible for LD—if not, just let it be random; after this third
round, parli goes to quarters)
Rd 4, High-Low (off of Rd. 1-2; rds 1-3 for LD, note PUBLIC
FORUM ROUND 4 IS POWERED OFF ROUND 2—THAT IS HOW IT ROLLS)

Rd 6, High-Low (pull teams with weaker opposition records
up; off rounds 1-5)
JUDGES
REMEMBER THAT ONLY CERTAIN JUDGES MAY JUDGE SENIOR AND CHAMP
DIVISIONS
REMEMBER
THAT EACH CHAMP LD AND POLICY TEAM CAN PREFERENCE JUDGES per Jim’s instructions
Please speak with me about assigning certain judges to certain
divisions in both LD and policy.
MONDAY, BEGIN AT 7:30PM—SORRY, YOU CANNOT START
BEFORE 7:30PM DUE TO THE ENTRY DEADLINE
1. ADD IN THE WHITMAN JUDGES JIM GIVES YOU
2. NOTE THAT WHITMAN STUDENTS JUDGE PARLI, THEY DO NOT
JUDGE IE’S.
3. WORK TO GET RID OF ANY DUPLICATE JUDGES BETWEEN THE
DIFFERENT TAB PROGRAMS
NOTICE FOR JUDGES—Put
them into LD, Policy, OR Public Forum. THEY CANNOT DO MORE THAN ONE OF THESE.
Don’t switch them back and forth except for Round 2; that causes errors.
4. POLICY JUDGES judge Round 2 of LD. ALL WHITMAN
STUDENTS JUDGE ROUND 2 OF LD. PUT THEM INTO NOVICE AND JV DIVISION—NO SR OR
CHAMP LD FOR POLICY JUDGES.
TUESDAY, MAKE ALL CHANGES THAT JIM EMAILS YOU.
BY
8PM, PRINT OUT COPIES OF THE LIST OF TEAMS AND THE LIST OF JUDGES IN EACH
DIVISION (SORTED BY DIVISION)
PRINT
THE NUMBER OF COPIES THAT JIM TELLS YOU TO (TYPICALLY 15).
1.
BY 6PM, DOUBLECHECK IT! PRINT OUT YOUR JUDGE LIST AND
POLICY AND LD: COMPARE THE POLICY AND LD LIST—Stop Duplicates!
IE AND PARLI: COMPARE THE PARLI AND IE LIST—Stop Duplicates!
2.
INPUT THE ROOM LIST THAT JIM GIVES YOU (YOU’LL GET IT
BY ABOUT 4 OR 5PM)—NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE BUILDING NAMES YOU USE ARE THE SAME AS THE ONES
ON THE MAP
--Policy typically gets Olin, Maxey and Science, and
Cordiner Foyer
--LD typically gets Mem, Res. Halls, Hunter, Reid, Sherwood Small Gym, Cordiner
auditorium, Maxey auditorium
--LD can use the policy rooms during round 2 ONLY
--Parli gets rooms from IE A Tab (Rounds 1-3, quarters, semis)
--Public Forum gets rooms not being used by other tab rooms
DO A TEST RUN.
Save the Spreadsheet. Save the Spreadsheet with a different
name.
1. DOUBLECHECK
IT! PRINT OUT YOUR ROOM LIST AND
POLICY AND LD: COMPARE YOUR ROOMS—Stop Duplicates for EACH and EVERY round
IE AND PARLI: COMPARE YOUR ROOMS—Stop Duplicates for IE A Rounds!!!
2. DOUBLECHECK IT! PAIR AND PRINT A TEST PAIRING OF
ROUND 1. LD AND POLICY SHOULD MAKE SURE THERE AREN’T DUPLICATE JUDGES AND
ROOMS. SAME FOR PARLI-IE.
3.
DOUBLECHECK
IT! Make sure that policy
judges aren't set to judge ie b or student congress
1. BY 1PM, PRINT OUT A LIST OF JUDGES BY SCHOOLS FOR THE
TOURNAMENT ASSISTANT FOR REGISTRATION
2. BY 1:30PM, PAIR AND PRINT ROUND 1 OF DEBATE—BEGIN AT
1PM AS YOU NEED TO DO DOUBLECHECKS—HS
TOURN. OBSERVE REGIONAL CONSTRAINTS
DO NOT WAIT FOR LAST MINUTE DROPS. START AT 1PM.
NOTES FOR THE BALLOTS/PAIRINGS:
POLICY: 1AC SPEAKS BY
5:15PM (15 MINUTES AFTER THE ROUND STARTS); BALLOT IS DUE BY 7:15PM
LD: 1AC SPEAKS 10 MINUTES
AFTER THE ROUND BEGINS; BALLOTS ARE DUE BY 7:15PM
---FOR ALL FUTURE
ROUNDS—POLICY GETS 15 MINUTES TO START; LD GETS 10 MINUTES; BALLOTS ARE DUE BY
THE TIME NOTED ON THE SCHEDULE.
---YOU MUST MUST STATE THESE TIMES ON THE BALLOTS AND
POSTINGS. FINES AND ALL KINDS OF CONTROLS RELY ON THIS.
3. PARLI: Whitman students judge Parli, NOT IEs.
Coordinate with the IE Tab.
4. DOUBLECHECK THE POSTINGS ROUND 1 AND 2 BETWEEN POLICY AND LD!
NO STRUCK JUDGES in Champ LD and Policy
NO DUPLICATE JUDGES –Compare LD and Policy posting
NO DUPLICATE USE OF ROOMS—Compare LD and Policy posting
I know these doublechecks are
a pain but they will avoid the major problems we had at the 2004 HS tournament.
Duplicate judge and rooms means the round starts 40 minutes late and massive
numbers of ballots get pushed.
5. ATTACH ITEMS TO THE
BALLOTS ROUNDS 1 AND 2
The How to Judge Policy/LD/Parli Sheet. Attach this for rounds 1 and 2.
Any other sheets Jim wants attached.
6.
BY 2PM GET BALLOTS AND ENOUGH
POSTINGS FOR ONE FOR EACH TEAM PLUS 3 FOR JIM for Round 1 to JIM/the
doublechecker.
TAPE ONE COPY OF THE POSTING TO THE CARDBOARD HOLDER. RUBBERBAND THE ALL OF
REMAINING POSTINGS TO THE CARDBOARD HOLDER.
NOTICE ONLY JIM POSTS PAIRINGS AND BALLOTS unless it is posting time and Jim is
not there.
WHEN
BALLOTS AND POSTINGS SHOULD GO OUT
·
At least 30 minutes before the rounds begin.
NOTE: Parli ballots/postings go out with IE A postings.
·
ALWAYS give these postings and ballots to
Jim or the tournament assistant to distribute. DO NOT POST YOURSELF. DO NOT PUT
BALLOTS OUT YOURSELF.
·
BE SURE TO ATTACH THE BALLOT COVER SHEETS TO
EACH AND EVERY BALLOT!!!!
·
Make corrections for adds and drops when they come
in—NOTICE DROP A TEAM ONLY IF THEY FORFEIT TWICE!!!!
ENTERING
RESULTS? Remember only scores of 24-30 are permitted unless the tournament
director gave permission for a lower score.
REMINDER: TURN OFF REGIONAL CONSTRAINTS
IN TOURNAMENT SETTINGS BEFORE ROUND 3!!!
10:30AM ON FRIDAY, ROUND 3 OF POLICY PAIRINGS MUST
BE CHECKED WITH IE B 1 AND 2 TO AVOID DUPLICATE ROOMS AND JUDGES. SEE THE IE
TAB AT 10:30AM FOR THIS!
This doublecheck is really needed—at
the 2004 HS tournament, duplicate ie b/policy judge and rooms caused major
problems—the round went off 40 minutes late; it caused a round to go late and
interfere with a professor’s test and that’s trouble; etc.
1. PRINT
AND DOUBLECHECK THE CUMES!!!
Look for any team given a forfeit, bye, zero
points. YOU SHOULD ASSUME NO TEAM SHOULD EVER RECEIVE ZERO POINTS.
Do a doublecheck to document
that a team really did deserve 0 points for a round. If not—adjust their
points.
2. GIVE
JIM YOUR LIST OF JUDGES SO THEY CAN BE CLARIFIED FOR WHAT DIVISION TO USE THEM.
3. We break
to a maximum of full octafinals in LD and Policy; maximum of quarterfinals in
Parli.
Debaters
must go a minimum of 4-2 in LD or Policy or 2-1 in Parli or 3-1 in Public Forum to be able to break.
If
there aren’t 16 (or 8 for parli) teams, then you have a partial elims round.
4. Elim
rounds should place teams
OCTAS 1 vs 16; 2 vs 15; etc.
QUARTERS 1 vs 8; 2 vs 7; etc.
SEMIS
1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3.
5. HOWEVER, WE DO BREAK BRACKETS. Do this very
carefully AND DOUBLECHECK!!!
If 1
and 8 are from the same school, then 1 hits 7 and 2 hits 8 instead. If 1 has
also hit 7, then, it becomes 1 hits 6; 3 hits 8; 2 hits 7.
NOTE—WE DO NOT BREAK BRACKETS IN CHAMP
DIVISION OF LD AND POLICY FOR SEMIS.
NOTE: DOUBLECHECK—NO TEAM SHOULD BE FORCED TO DEBATE
IN A PARTIAL ELIM THAT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO BECAUSE BRACKETS WERE BROKEN.
6. SETUP
FOR POLICY AND LD AND PROBABLY PUBLIC FORUM ELIMS
Talk with Jim but this is the general setup:
MAKE SURE EACH AND EVERY ELIM BALLOT STATES:
“YOU CAN JUDGE A TEAM IN ELIMS
THAT YOU JUDGED IN PRELIMS.”
“THERE ARE THREE JUDGES IN POLICY & LD
ELIMS. WAIT FOR ALL THREE TO ARRIVE BEFORE STARTING.”
“ANNOUNCE THE WINNER OF THE ROUND
TO THE TWO TEAMS.”
MAKE SURE EACH AND EVERY ELIM POSTING STATES:
“THE 1AC STARTS AT X TIME”
“THERE ARE THREE JUDGES IN POLICY
& LD ELIMS. WAIT FOR ALL THREE TO ARRIVE BEFORE STARTING.”
“THE JUDGE SHOULD ANNOUNCE THE
WINNER OF THE ROUND TO THE TWO TEAMS.”
FOR POLICY OCTAS
FOR CHAMP, USE SECOND FLOOR OF OLIN
FOR SENIOR, USE THIRD FLOOR OF OLIN
FOR JUNIOR, USE FIRST FLOOR OF OLIN AND FIRST FLOOR OF MAXEY
FOR NOVICE, USE SECOND FLOOR OF MAXEY AND 1 OR 2 ROOMS OF
THIRD FLOOR OF MAXEY
TELL LD TAB WHICH MAXEY ROOMS THEY CAN HAVE FOR LD OCTAS.
FOR POLICY QUARTERS
FOR CHAMP AND SENIOR, USE SECOND FLOOR OF OLIN
FOR JUNIOR AND NOVICE, USE THIRD FLOOR OF OLIN
FOR POLICY SEMIS AND FINALS—USE OLIN 2ND FLOOR
ONLY. DO NOT USE SAME ROOMS AS LD. DO NOT USE FIRST FLOOR ROOMS.
FOR LD OCTAS:
Use Maxey for Champ and Sr BUT ONLY THIRD FLOOR AND
ONLY ROOMS NOT USED BY POLICY—DOUBLECHECK
Use Hunter 105, 106, 107, 205 for Jr; Use Reid Rooms for
Novice.
FOR LD QUARTERS, USE MAXEY only (remember that it is single
flighted).
FOR LD SEMIS AND FINALS, USE OLIN 3RD FLOOR ONLY.
DO NOT USE THE SAME ROOMS AS POLICY. DO NOT USE FIRST FLOOR ROOMS.
7. SETUP
FOR PARLI QUARTERS, SEMIS, AND FINALS
After checking with the IE Tab Head Person, SETUP PARLI
QUARTERS USING ROOMS IN OLIN THAT THE IE TAB ISN’T USING. DOUBLECHECK WITH IE
TAB—DON’T DOUBLE USE ROOMS.
FOR PARLI QUARTERS, DO THE
FOLLOWING:
Assign 1 judge to each
parli quarters round. DO NOT USE 3 JUDGES. We don’t have enough people to do
that.
THE ROUND SHOULD BE PAIRED
WITH 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5
Yes, we break brackets (if
two debaters from the same school are set to hit each other in elims). The
program does this for you by checking the option.
Yes, judges can and will
judge debaters multiple times during elim rounds.
Distribute quarters ballots
in Cordiner at the regular ballot table.
ON THE PARLI QUARTERS BALLOTS
state:
“1AC STARTS AT 10:45AM”
“THERE IS ONLY ONE JUDGE IN PARLI QUARTERS AND SEMIS.”
“ANNOUNCE THE WINNER. TELL THE WINNER THAT THE SEMIS ROUND OCCURS AT NOON.”
“TURN IN THE PARLI QUARTERS BALLOT TO THE OLIN FOYER BALLOT TABLE. WAIT THERE
FOR YOUR SEMIS BALLOT.”
PARLI POSTINGS SHOULD SAY:
“1AC STARTS AT 10:45AM”
“THERE IS ONLY ONE JUDGE IN PARLI QUARTERS AND SEMIS.”
“JUDGES ANNOUNCE THE WINNER.”
“THE SEMIS ROUND OCCURS AT NOON AND IS POSTED IN OLIN FOYER. IF YOU WIN
QUARTERS, BE THERE FOR SEMIS ON TIME.”
FOR PARLI SEMIS, SETUP A BALLOT
TABLE AND TAB IN OLIN FOYER—BE THERE YOURSELF
Collect the quarters ballots and
setup semis.
Semis also has only one judge and
continue to use the same Olin rooms that you used for quarters (avoiding
conflicts with IE room use).
Post the Parli Semis pairings in the Olin Foyer, distribute ballots there, and
periodically tell kids ORALLY that it is posted.
ON THE PARLI SEMIS BALLOTS state
“1AC STARTS AT 12:05PM”
“THERE IS ONLY ONE JUDGE IN PARLI SEMIS.”
“ANNOUNCE THE WINNER. TELL THE WINNER THAT THE FINALS ROUND OCCURS AT 3:20PM”
“TURN IN THE BALLOT TO THE REGULAR CORDINER BALLOT TABLE.”
PARLI POSTINGS SHOULD SAY:
“1AC STARTS AT 12:05PM”
“THERE IS ONLY ONE JUDGE IN PARLI QUARTERS AND SEMIS.”
“JUDGES ANNOUNCE THE WINNER.”
“THE FINALS ROUND OCCURS AT 3:20PM AND IS POSTED AT CORDINER. IF YOU WIN SEMIS,
BE THERE FOR FINALS ON TIME.”
Make sure the semis round is
occurring, POST A SIGN WHERE YOU WERE IN OLIN FOYER SAYING “TURN IN YOUR PARLI
SEMIS BALLOT TO CORDINER—NOT HERE” and then return to the IE/Parli tab room in
Hunter.
FOR PARLI FINALS, USE THREE JUDGES. USE ROOMS THAT ARE NOT
BEING USED BY POLICY OR STUDENT CONGRESS.
ON THE PARLI FINALS BALLOTS state:
“1AC STARTS AT 3:25PM”
“THERE ARE THREE JUDGES IN PARLI FINALS—BE SURE TO WAIT FOR ALL 3.”
“ANNOUNCE THE WINNER.”
“TURN IN THE BALLOT TO THE REGULAR CORDINER BALLOT TABLE.”
7. NOTES
ON THE BALLOTS FOR ELIMS
Include this note on the ballot “ANNOUNCE THE DECISION AND
WHEN YOU DO—PLEASE STATE THE FULL NAME OF THE DEBATER/TEAM.”
(why? To avoid them voting for the
wrong debater—especially in doubleflighted rounds. In 2007—a judge voted for
the wrong mercer island debater in 2 doubleflighted rounds and caused two 2-1
decisions to go the wrong way!!!!)
SATURDAY MORNING—FINISH BY NOON
1.
Print out the cums sheets—GET TO PHOTOCOPIERS/PRINT
ENOUGH FOR ONE COPY FOR EACH SCHOOL
2.
Print out the ranking of speakers 1st through last
sheets—GET TO PHOTOCOPIERS/PRINT ENOUGH FOR ONE COPY FOR EACH SCHOOL
FOR POLICY SEMIS AND
FINALS, USE OLIN SECOND FLOOR
FOR LD SEMIS AND
FINALS, USE OLIN THIRD FLOOR
DO NOT USE OLIN 155,
161, 157, OR 130 FOR SEMIS/FINALS.
BY 4PM AT
THE LATEST, GET READY TO ANNOUNCE AND GO TO THE AWARDS ASSEMBLY
1.
Be ready to announce the top speakers in each
division of debate per the instructions in the Invitation. (top 5 in all
divisions).
NOTICE: PARLI DEBATE DOES NOT HAVE SPEAKER AWARDS; DON’T ANNOUNCE THOSE.
2.
Be ready to announce the elim losers in each event
who will receive an award (octafinalists and quarterfinalists)
3.
THE PERSON ANNOUNCING MUST BE APPROVED BY JIM.
4.
Pair the semifinals round and print out ballots.
BY 4:05PM,
ANNOUNCE AWARDS DURING THE ASSEMBLY
The procedure for
announcing is as follows:
·
Tell all elim participants in the division (e.g., Jr.
Policy) to come to the front on the aisles
·
Wait a moment for the competitors to come to the
front sides
·
State, "Receiving quarterfinalist awards are the
following teams: Boise Johnson and Stone; pause; Ferris Gold and Bevel; pause;
etc."
PLEASE DO NOT ANNOUNCE THE DECISIONS AND WHO HIT WHO—Avoiding that speeds up
the awards assembly.
·
After the awards are given, go on to the next group
Do not
announce the semi-finals rounds and judges in the awards assembly
·
Pairings and Ballots should be available outside in
Cordiner foyer (high school tournament)
AFTER
AWARDS, SETUP FOR SEMIS AND FINALS IN OLIN
We move to Olin 155 after the main awards assembly; Olin 155
is the new tab room
Bring computers, printers, all needed files and supplies,
etc. to Olin 155
Pizza will be available there in Olin
The ballot table is in Olin Foyer
The semis and finals awards assemblies occur in Olin 130
FOR JUDGES FOR SEMIS AND FINALS, TALK WITH JIM.
