Hi
I'm
very glad to have you on board for this year's tournament.
In
your job, it is important that you be nice, helpful, and supportive to the
kids, coaches, and judges. Your exchanges with these folks is the number one impression
they get of the college and specifically of our debate program.
These
folks tend to be kind of "spaced out" in their own tournament world
but they're also smart and almost always cooperative and helpful.
WHAT
KIND OF CLOTHES TO WEAR?
Casual
nice/Casual. No need for anything fancy but I would prefer you look neat and
ready to help people!
1. YOU SHOULD BE IN HUNTER FOYER AT
6:30pm on Thursday.
When
you come to the foyer, come up to me and tell me your name and job and I'll get
you going.
I
tend to be a bit delayed/distracted because the tournament is so hectic for me
but just be nicely persistent and I'll be glad to get you started.
This will
give you vitally needed information and allow you to help people who ask
questions during the tournament. If you
don't tape these to your table, someone will take them.
DO NOT
MOVE FROM THE TABLE DURING THIS TIME EXCEPT IF YOU MUST FIND A JUDGE. We need you to be available at any moment’s
notice for help.
1.
ACCEPT THE BALLOT
Ask the judge to stay until you
finish checking her or his ballot. DO
NOT LET HER OR HIM GO UNTIL YOU HAVE CHECKED.
2.
CHECK IE BALLOTS
--Make sure there is one 1, one 2,
and one 3 ranking and the rest are 4 rankings (5's are not permitted--make sure
the judge gave no worse than a 4)
--Make sure the judge has given a rating of 24-30 for the student’s speech.
--You may not accept Ballots that say “No Shows” until 10 minutes before
the end of the round. The judge must return to the room to wait for
the speaker. If it is 11 to 15 minutes before the end of the round, tell the
judge to stand near the ballot table (odds are the “missing” student will show
up and the judge will watch him/her in Hunter).
--CHECK THAT THE NAME, RANKING, AND RATING ON EACH EVERY BALLOT MATCHES THE
COVER SHEET.
3.
CHECK DEBATE BALLOTS
--You may not accept no show/forfeits until 10 minutes after the 1AC start
time. The judge must return to the
room to wait for the speaker.
--Check that the judge circled ONE AND ONLY ONE team (the affirmative or
negative).
--Make sure that the winning team had the highest points--if not, ask the judge
to confirm that she or he gave the win to the low point team.
--Make sure the judge gave speaker points to each and every debater with a
score from 24-30. Points beneath 24 need
serious justification (as in rudeness).
--WE EXPECT BALLOTS TO
HAVE A WRITTEN REASON FOR DECISION WITH COMMENTS.
4.
MARK OFF THE JUDGE’S
--Don’t use a thick/black felt
marker—we may still need to check on some ballots that have been turned.
--By doing this, we know which ballots are "in" and which ballots are
not "in".
--If the judge’s name is different from the name on your posting--make a note
of it.
5.
WHEN YOU ARE DONE, TELL THE JUDGE HE/SHE CAN NOW
PICK UP HIS/HER NEXT BALLOT.
6.
Give all ballots that you have marked to the ballot
runner ASAP.
7.
WRITE DOWN ANY JUDGES NAMES WHO TURN IN THEIR BALLOT
AFTER THE DEADLINE.
--These judges then have their
schools fined for being late.
--GIVE THE LIST OF LATE JUDGES TO JIM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER ALL BALLOTS ARE
IN.
Judge says: “What points do I give for a team that
forfeited?” Answer: Zero.
Judge says: “What do I do with the points for the
team that receives the bye?”
Answer: Write in “Average points.”
Judge says: “Students spoke for a portion and then
gave up—what points do I give?”
Answer: A portion of the points say 12 out of 30 points.
Judge says “What about the other team that didn’t
get to speak when the other team partially gave up?” Answer: Give points to any debater that spoke. If
the debater did not speak but only because the other team gave up, write in
“Average points.”
Person asks: “Do you power protect or power match?” Answer: Power matching in debate begins in Round 3.
We do not power protect. In individual events, pairings are done by adjusting
speaking panels to have different speakers and speaker in a different speaking
position from their previous round.
Person says “I can’t find my room.” “I don’t have a
judge.” SEND THEM TO the Questions
person.
Lost and Found? “Go to the Questions person.” We take items there and give them back
to people.
Person says “Judge was bad/playing computer
games/taking cell calls during debate/etc.” Go to the Questions person.
AFTER ALL BALLOTS ARE IN FOR A ROUND, TAKE 20
MINUTES AND CLEAN UP REID. Throw
away trash, clean up messes, etc. in Reid. NOTE
NOTE NOTE Do NOT throw away papers with writing on
them. Just try to organize them into a neat pile or leave them alone. THESE ARE
OFTEN IMPORTANT materials for the students’ debates/speeches.
You also need to clean the Reid bathrooms of trash. If a bathroom is in really bad shape, alert Jim.
Obviously, wash your hands after you do this. You are not expected to nor
should you clean any “dirty” messes—just paper towels—that kind of stuff.
AFTER YOU CLEAN REID—GUIDE DUTIES: One person goes to Science and Olin. One person
goes to Music, Hunter, and Maxey. Deal with any problems in those buildings
such as you should clean messes (check each bathroom), unruly or loud students
(tell them to stop; if necessary contact Jim); give directions to lost
students; AT AROUND 10:30AM AND 3PM ON FRIDAY, ask the main office secretaries
if there are any problems (note them and solve them or contact Jim)—DO THIS
ONLY TWICE ON FRIDAY (don’t be a nuisance to the secretaries).
BE BACK AT THE BALLOT COLLECTION TABLE 30 MINUTES
BEFORE THE END OF THE ROUND.
When you return—REFRESH THE COFFEE AND HOT WATER.
