The team expanded in its efforts to do well nationally during this year. Adam and Sean went to the NDT with Becky Galentine. Dan Lair took Isaac Kamola, Jason Smith, David Kearney, and Kristofer Peterson to the Carroll-Northwest swing. On the right side, you can see Leah, Even, Akshay, David, Jason, and David.

Old Music Building is scheduled to be renovated, and a new multi-media center will be opened. By the end of the year, it is clear that the Speech department and forensics teams will be moving to the new building. Sherwood undergoes large-scale renovations

CHANGE: Bob returned from sabattical. Rhetoric
110 description was changed. Political campaign course added. Rhetorical
Criticism renamed Critiquing Criticism. Bob moved his office to Olin 339.
Speech Department Description: Courses treat public speaking as a liberal art, proposing that such speaking is not a skill learned by rule but an exercise of judgment that can be no better than the speaker's understanding of the nature of the communicative acts.

Fall 1996 was a major outreach effort on the part of the forensics program and rhetoric department. Here, Bob and Jim join President Tom Cronin and Professor Mary Hanna for a discussion of the 1996 Presidential campaign. The team also hosted a reunion and the British debaters on campus.

Stephen and Simone from Britain joined us for a debate with Jason Smith and Sean Harris to a full crowd in Olin 157. Loan, Jared, and Ryan enjoy a party at Bob Withycombe’s house in honor of the visiting Brits.

· Presidential Campaign between Dole and Clinton. The Pio ran a lot of political ads.
· Debate over pot continues: Should marijuana be legalized.
· Whitman ups support for victims of sexual misconduct.
· U.S Ambassador to Kuwait and Whitman Alumnus Ryan C. Crocker visits Whitman to hold a lecture on the U. S foreign policy in the Middle East
· Whitman welcomes the former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, to give a lecture in Cordiner Hall.
· The GA endorsed a treaty on September 10 that would end nuclear weapons testing.
· Israel: Fighting erupted in Israel between Israeli and the Palestinians after the government completed an opening to an archeological tunnel near the third holiest Islamic shrine.
· Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan soldiers increased forces around a northern rebel stronghold during a siege that has killed 700 people.
· Zaire: The civil war is intensifying in Zaire is looking on Morocco for support against the rebels.
· US should change its drug policies
· A cry for Democracy is coming out of Serbia, where Slobodan Milosevic and the rest of the Socialist Party have been accused of committing massive poll fraud.
· Serbian students protest their own government.
· Ralf Nader of the Green Party is an unofficial candidate for president this election.

This was the last year
of the main meetings during the Hanson years. After this point, Jim did
meetings via e-mail on the team’s listserv although the team still met but for
much shorter times.

of the speech and debate team.

Awards
The debate team attended 20 tournaments this year; including sending 6 debaters to the national Parliamentary debate Association Championship Tournament in Kansas. Sean Harris and sophomore Adam Symonds qualify for the prestigious National Debate tournament held at Liberty University in Virginia, in which they finished the 17th in the nation and advanced into elimination rounds. Chiasha Dickens and Kristofer Peterson qualified for the National Individual Events Tournament held in Austin, Texas Jason Liu and Jessika Clarke, first year students, also advanced to triple-octafinals, which Hanson describes as "phenomenal for a first year team." On the trip to Colorado Peterson and junior David Kearny, who were 8th and 20th speaker, finished 9th in the nation. Jason Smith and Dave Perry took first place in 2 different tournaments. The squad took second place among Northwest Forensics Conference Division One Schools. Eleven debate teams advanced to elimination rounds at one tournament, and Dickens' persuasive speech took first place in fourteen consecutive rounds. The CEDA debaters completed the year among the top 31 schools in the nation for CEDA sweepstakes and among the top 25 for National Debate Tournament Sweepstakes. The parliamentary debaters ended the year as the number 10 NPDA team in the Nation. POLICY DEBATE (This is the first year that CEDA and NDT combined topics)
