Jim Hanson is the Director of Forensics and debate coach.

·               The politics department hires two new professors Manfred Steger and Andrea Wuerth
·               Whitman welcomes two new professors to its education department, Fred Garza and Anne Pailliotet.
·               New professor Matthew Freytag joins the philosophy department.
·               The foreign languages and literature departments adds two new Spanish professors this year, Polly Hodge and Richard Davies.
·               Professor of Economics Gordon Philpot retires after 27 years teaching at Whitman.
·               In the fall of this year the beginning of the tennis courts is one of the most noticeable projects on campus
·               Whitman receives a grant of 2000,000 from Kresge Foundation for the renovation of Lyman.
·               The Office of Admission and Financial Aid relocate to Penrose House

Speech Courses

CHANGE: Bob Withycombe goes on sabattical. Jim teaches 30 person Rhetoric 110 courses to cover the load. 221 and 222 are split up with 221 being for parliamentary debate and individual events; 222 being for policy debate. Minor changes in the wordings of a few courses were also made.

Speech Department Description: Courses treat public speaking as a liberal art, proposing that such speaking is not a skill learned by rule but an exercise of judgment that can be no better than the speaker's understanding of the nature of the communicative acts.

World News

·               The Republicans and the Young Democrats club debate about the affirmative action. Feminists also debate the path to gender equlity.
·               Internet censorship promotes violation of rights.
·               Drinking abuse a concern on campus
·               Washington DC Clinton signs a bill that gives states the right to set their own speed limits.  He also asked to send 20, 000 troops to Bosnia for peacekeeping
·               The Pio ran adds on date rape awareness, the Treasure Net Computers and for the Walla Walla vision center.
·               Faculty and students raise gay awareness on campus as part of the National Coming Out Day.
·               In the world news, the situation in Rwanda.  The government fails to help. The jails are overpopulated and over 2000 inmates have died over the past 15 months from desease.
·               Sri Lanka at least 70 people were killed in between Sri Lankan troops and the separatist forces  in a week.

 

Jason Smith and David Kearney showed well at the Northwest Pi Kappa Delta tournament.

Intercollegiate debate.
About 40 schools attend the Whitman College Intercollegiate debate tournament hosted by Jim Hanson.  This tournament brings about 500 contestants, 30 of which are from Whitman College. The CEDA Debate Topic is on U.S foreign policy relating to Mexico
