Whitman News

 

I.                    Whitman College in 1992-1993

A.     Prentiss Hall was renovated at a cost of $3.95 million, $1.7 million under estimates.

B.     The Global Awareness interest house opened.

C.     The college received a statue of Marcus Whitman from the state of Washington.

D.     Memorial Building was reroofed in the summer of 1992.

E.      With 403 students, the incoming class was the second largest ever.

F.      David Maxwell was the college president, but he resigned during the year.

G.     Dan Zuiches was the ASWC president.

Speech Courses

Jim added Rhetorical Criticism to the curriculum. Speech Department Description: Courses treat public speaking as a liberal art, proposing that such speaking is not a skill learned by rule but an exercise of judgment that can be no better than the speaker's understanding of the nature of the communicative acts.

Bob Withycombe gives Jennifer Becker a top award at the Linfield College tournament.

 

Team Awards

A.     Jim Hanson started with the team as co-director of forensics with Bob Withycombe.

B.     Withycombe was the national president of CEDA.

C.     Dovell-Gose Oratory Contest

1.      In the men’s division, Ryan Hagemann won first and David Bruggerman was second.

2.      In the women’s contest, Christina Olson was first, Beth Anderson was second, and Charlotte Smith was third with a speech on democracy in history.

D.     The intercollegiate topic for the second semester was “Resolved: That the U. N.’s implementation of it Universal Declaration of Human Rights is more important than preserving state sovereignty.

E.      Competitive season

1.      Western Washington University Scrimmage

a.       Cassie Buckner and Jessie Comes competed in open debate with a 2-4 record.

b.      Jen Becker and Smith were second in open with a 5-1 record.

c.       Rowland Hobbs and Sean Swinney had a 2-4 record in open.

d.      Matt Levin and Loan Lam had a 1-5 record in open.

e.       Steve Rowe and Greg Schnoor had a 2-4 record in open.

f.        Smith was third speaker.

g.       The team earned seven CEDA points.

2.      Lewis and Clark College

a.       Becker and Smith had a 4-2 prelim record in open and won second with a 3-0, 2-1, 0-3 elim record.

b.      Hobbs and Nicole Matarelli had a 3-3 record in open.

c.       Levin and Schnoor had a 3-3 prelim record and won third in open with a 2-1, 1-2 elim record.

d.      Swinney/Buckner/Comes had a 3-3 record in intermediate debate.

e.       Lam and Rowe had a 4-2 record in intermediate.

f.        Smith, Schnoor, Becker, and Levin were first, second, fourth, and sixth speakers, respectively, in open division.

g.       Buckner and Comes tied for ninth speaker in intermediate.

h.       The team earned 15 CEDA points.

3.      University of Oregon

a.       Lam and Rowe had a 2-4 record in open division.

b.      Matarelli and Hobbs had a 4-2 prelim record in open division, won ninth, and had a 0-3 elim record.

c.       Smith and Becker had a 4-2 prelim record in open, won third, and had a 3-0, 2-1, 1-2 elim record. Smith and Becker were second and third speakers, respectively.

d.      Swinney and Buckner had a 4-2 prelim record in open, took ninth, and had a 0-3 elim record.

e.       The team earned 14 CEDA points.

4.      Wichita State University

a.       Smith and Levin had a 2-4 prelim record in open.

b.      Matarelli and Hobbs had a 1-5 record in open.

c.       The team earned three CEDA points.

5.      Pacific Lutheran University

a.       Rowe and Lam had a 5-1 prelim record in open and tied for first with a 2-1 elim record.

b.      Smith and Becker had a 5-1 prelim record in open and tied for first with a 2-1 elim record.

c.       The team earned 14 CEDA points.

6.      Western Washington University

a.       Swinney and Ari Herschlip had a 1-5 prelim record in junior debate.

b.      Lam and Buckner had a 2-4 record in senior debate.

c.       Matarelli and Hobbs had a 5-1 prelim record in senior and won fifth with a 0-3 elim record.

d.      Rowe and Andy Backlund had a 3-3 record in senior.

e.       Smith and Becker had a 5-1 prelim record in senior and won first with a 3-0, 2-1, 2-1 elim record. Smith and Becker were first and fifth speakers, respectively.

f.        The team earned 17 CEDA points.

7.      Heart of America

a.       Becker and Smith had a 3-5 record in open, as did Hobbs and Matarelli.

b.      Backlund and Rowe had a 2-6 record in open.

c.       Buckner and Lam had a 1-7 record in open.

d.      The team earned six CEDA points.

8.      Pi Kappa Delta Nationals

a.       Backlund and Rowe had a 2-4 record in open, as did Matarelli and Hobbs.

b.      Schnoor and Buckner had a 3-3 record in open.

c.       Smith and Becker had a 3-3 record in open and won second place with a 2-1, 2-1, 1-2 elim record.

d.      The team earned 11 CEDA points.

9.      Whitman College

a.       Herschlip and Swinney had a 2-4 record in junior debate.

b.      Lam and Buckner had a 3-3 record in senior debate.

c.       Rowe and Backlund had a 5-1 prelim record in senior and tied for first with a 2-1, 2-1 elim record, as did Smith and Becker who also were first and fifth speakers, respectively.

d.      The team earned 18 CEDA points.

10.  Willamette University Invitational

a.       Schnoor had a 3-3 record in senior on a hybrid team with Pacific Lutheran University.

b.      Matarelli and Hobbs had a 5-1 prelim record in senior and were third with a 0-3 record.

c.       Smith and Becker had a 3-3 prelim record in senior and won third with a 0-3 elim record.

d.      Lam and Buckner had a 3-3 prelim record in junior and tied for first with a 2-1, 2-1 elim record.

e.       Kerrie Leitch and Kim had a 2-4 record in novice debate.

f.        Rowe and Backlund had a 4-2 prelim record in junior and tied for first with a 3-0, 2-1 elim record.

g.       Matarelli, Becker, and Smith were second, fourth, and fifth speakers, respectively, in senior.

h.       Rowe was second speaker in junior division.

i.         The team earned 16 CEDA points.

11.  Northwest CEDA Championships

a.       Backlund and Rowe won ninth in open with a  3-3 prelim record and a 1-2 elim record.

b.      Hobbs and Buckner were also ninth in open with a 3-3 prelim record and a 0-3 elim record.

c.       Smith and Becker had a 5-1 prelim record in open and won fifth with a 2-1, 0-3 elim record. Smith was also third speaker.

d.      The team earned 11 CEDA points.

12.  Towson State University

a.       Becker and Smith had a 3-5 record in open division and tied for third and fourth speakers.

b.      The team earned three CEDA points.

13.  CEDA Nationals

a.       Becker and Smith had a 6-2 prelim record in open and won fifth with a  2-1, 2-1, 2-1, 0-3 elim record.

b.      Lam and Buckner had a 3-5 record in open.

c.       Matarelli and Hobbs had a 5-3 prelim record and won 33rd with a 0-3 elim record.

d.      Rowe and Backlund had a 3-5 record in open.

e.       The team earned 17 CEDA points.
