Whitman News
I. Whitman College in 1974-1975
A. The College added just one
new faculty member.
In the Department of Philosophy, William J. Sopher
was added as the Associate Professor of Philosophy.
B.
Robert A.
Skotheim takes over the college presidency from June 15th.
C. Al Lyon is the student body
president.
D. Mrs. Wilcox and Mrs.
Rasmussen are the directors of the Speech team.
E. Hue and cry is raised as
ASWC apparently misplaces around $5000 and is unable to come up with any
explanations
F. Medical school acceptances
are up by record numbers as Whitman gains recognition amongst the top medical
schools in the nation.
G. A “Study Improvement Lab”
opens for the first time in Whitman College with the help of director Diane
Shafer.
H. A 7.9% increase in tuition
at the college leaves many students frustrated as many feel that the cost of a
Whitman diploma is already high.
Speech
Courses
The department's course descriptions reflect a focus on
diction and articulation and the debate course offers argumentation training.
Speech 41 and 42 were both dropped. Speech 43, 44 was now offered every year rather
than every other year.
Speech Department Description: Courses treat public speaking
as a liberal art, proposing that such speaking is not a skill learned by rule
but an exercise of judgment that can be no better than the speaker's
understanding of the nature of the communicative acts.
SPEECH 11.
Fundamentals of Speech, 3 hours. (description changes; 11 and 12 are focus
more on delivery and articulation)
SPEECH 14.
Fundamentals of Articulation and Diction, 3 hours.
SPEECH 43, 44. Principles
and Practice of Forensics, 3 hours.
