The college
added 3 new professors to the faculty
1.
In the Music
Department, Meredith Rugg Mitchell was added to the faculty as Assistant
Instructor in Music.
2.
In the division
of Arts and Humanities, Marlene Gresko Rambaldi, was added to the Theatre
Department.
3.
In the division
of physical education, John Dale Wilcox was made Assistant Professor of
Physical Education.
B.
Dave Curtis was
reelected as the student body president.
C.
Donald Sheehan
was the college president.
D. The International Relations Center was founded
under the leadership of Professor Frederick Breit.
E. The Pioneer ran advertisements for the Sky-Vue
drive-in movie theatre, the Green Lantern and Circle A Ranch Fried Chicken.
F. For women, campus clothes were solid colors and
multi striped jeans with colorful tee shirts. The popular brand of shoes was
boots with new straps and brawn leather.
G. Maya Angelou visits Whitman College and talks
about her famous autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” which was
voted by Newsweek as one of the best books of 1970.

Courses
The
department underwent more changes. The department description was changed,
Fundamentals became more rhetorical theory focused.
New
Speech Department Description: Courses treat public speaking as a liberal art,
proposing that such speaking is not a skill learned by rule but an exercise of
judgment that can be no better than the speaker's understanding of the nature
of the communicative acts.

A. President Nixon and Henry Kissinger make their
historic tour to China where they talked to Chairman Mao Tse-Tung and Premier
Chou En-Lai in Peking.
B. In India, The Congress Party led by Indira Gandhi
scored the most overwhelming electoral victory in the history of independent
India.
A new nation was born as Bangladesh gained
independence from Pakistan after a bloody nine-month civil war. At the same
time, the first ever elections were held in Papua New Guinea to herald the mark
of a new government.
D. Protestants carrying flags of Ulster and Britain
march in protest after suspension of Stormont and finally clash with police
which leaves many dead.

Awards
A. Professor Arlington announced a new approach
toward the Dovell-Gose oratory contest and said this new approach was the
reason why the contest was not held in the prior year. Students were now required
to present orations on a theme. The year's theme was "Orwell's 1984."
It was held October 14, at 7:30pm.
