Whitman News

A. The college added 4 new professors to the faculty.

1.      In the division of Arts and Humanities, William S. Cole joined Whitman College as an ethnomusicologist in Whitman’s music department.

2.      In the division of sciences, Richard Brown joined as professor of Biology and Louis Phillip Howland joined as professor of Biology.

3.      Frank Leslie Mapson, who was the visiting Lecturer in Dramatic Art, was made permanent member of the faculty.

Dave Curtis was the student body president.

B. Donald Sheehan was the college president

C. The big debate on campus was whether Whitman College was aptly equipped with services necessary to handle sexual mishaps and problems. Doctor Ball advocated  introduction of specialists to help students with specific problems.

D. Whitman is abuzz with the arrival of Dr. Sripati Chandrasekhar, India’s Minister of Health and Education, as he delivers a speech on India’s pollution problems. Dr. Chandrashekar is the first Asian minister to visit Whitman College.

E. The college admissions committee decides to enroll more minorities in Whitman.

F. The annual Executive Committee held its annual meeting with concerns on how to combat apathy in the campus on top of its agenda.

 

Speech Courses

The department dropped radio broadcast, changed its program description, and added foreign study.

Department Description: Speech courses are designed to focus on controlled communication. Attention is given to systems, settings and strategies and to the encouragement of sound judgment in communications practice. The student is urged to become a responsible listener and communicator.

SPEECH 11 Fundamentals of Speech, 3 hours. (the course emphasized theory and an overview of studies in the speech discipline)

SPEECH 41. Theory and Practice of Discussion, 3 hours.

SPEECH 42. Argumentation and Persuasion, 3 hours.

SPEECH 43, 44. Principles and Practice of Debate, 2hours. (not offered during 1970-1971)

SPEECH 33, 56. Independent Study, 1-2 hours.  

SPEECH 71, 72. Foreign Study Project, 5 hours.

 

World News

A.      Different regions around the world were engaged in military struggle. The US was  still involved with the Vietnam issue. There was a small war going on in the subcontinent with India, Pakistan and Bangladesh embroiled in a civil war. Other countries, like Cuba, China and the Soviet Union, were busy training military units all over in preparation of armed combat.

B.       Elections in South Vietnam were in progress, marking the retreat of US forces.

C.      Motown magic, with the “Jackson Five” spearheading it, was slowly having an impact in the US and in the world.

D.      The Russians made the first space docking possible as the Soyuz 11 docked with an orbiting space station.

E.       The world got a clearer view of the US’s involvement in Vietnam as the famous Pentagon Papers were released to the press for the first time.

 

Team Awards

Professor Arlington announced an on-campus tournament in November to determine who would go to a tournament at Colorado Springs.

Linda Smith and Scott Sherman earned a "good" in debate at the 27th Pi Kappa Delta National tournament, April 8, 1971.
