Whitman News

A.     Louis Perry was the college president, but announced that he would leave Whitman, leaving Chester Maxey as acting president.

B.     Craig Lesley was the ASWC president.

C.     Baker Ferguson was named as a trustee of the college while trustees rejected a proposal to allow senior women to live off-campus.

D.     School enrollment was 1, 023.

E.      The Phi Delts deleted the race clause from their charter and four Sigma Chis dropped their membership because the fraternity would not drop the national charter which maintained racial discrimination.

F.      Fourteen new faculty members joined the college.

G.     John Kenneth Galbraith kicked off a lecture series on campus.

-    Comic books are becoming quite popular

-    Bids for the proposed Cordiner Hall are considered

-    A committee is formed to draft new college goals

-    The Drama Arts Committee puts on "Connection", a psychedelic play

-    President Perry announces an effort to make Whitman athletics

competitive

-    The first ever Student-Trustee combined forum is held

-    Professor Lehmann is the world leader in studying sleeping

THE MAJOR: Thirteen hours selected from courses in speech; Dramatic Art 47, 48; twelve hours selected from English 25, 26, 35, 36, 39, 40, 75, 76, 79, 80; three hours selected from History 27, 28, 57, 58, 61, 62, 64. Of the total of thirty-six hours, eighteen must be in courses numbered above 50. Advised: As much additional work in dramatic art as time permits.

World News

I.                    In the world, Vietnam dominated the issues of the day.

 

Team Awards

A.     Centralia Tournament

1.      Troyer and Dawson, Tai and Whitby, Kahn and Snow, Robart and Carlylse, Vance and Howell, and Whitney and Moyer all debated Oxford-style.

2.      Whitman took third at the opening tournament of the year.

B.     Washington State University Tournament

1.      The debate team won the meet.

2.      Phillips was first in impromptu speaking.

3.      Lee won first in oratory.

C.     Idaho meet

1.      Whitman won the tournament.

2.      Jones and Tenold were the only undefeated team.

D.     Linfield College Tournament

1.      Higgins was first in men’s impromptu speaking while DeMueles was a finalist.

2.      Klenman was in the finals of women’s extemporaneous speaking.

3.      Phillips was a finalist in women’s impromptu speaking.

E.      Pi Kappa Delta

1.      The team won high honors.

2.      DeMeules and Higgins received a superior rating with an 8-0 record.

3.      Higgins, McCornack, Tai, Shelton, DeMeules, King, Brett, and Stocking were all members of Pi Kappa Delta.
