The Yearbook
Said Whitman has been represented by
twenty-five speakers in tournaments so far this year. After having won ten
first places and numerous seconds and thirds, as well as twelve of seventeen
rounds at Harvard, last year, another winning season was anticipated. This is
proving to be the case. At the W.S.U.
senior division tournament William Deshler and Walter C. Minnick won first
place in men's debate. John Lewallen and Donald
Anderson were third. In women's debate Candace Hansen and Julie Gaisford placed second. Minnick was second in
extemporaneous speaking and Miss Gaisford third in
oratory. The team of Miss
Hansen and Miss Esther Hartglass won second place
in the junior division tournament at Miss Gaisford was the winner of first place in impromptu at
the Western States tournament at The debate teams
of Deshler and Minnick and the Misses Hansen and Gaisford
were each in second place in their divisions at the At the junior division tournament at the The excellence of
the work being done by Whitman debate teams is being given recognition by
invitations to several of the most important tournaments in the nation this
year: Harvard University, the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and
M.I.T. Deshler and Minnick will be at the latter two meets on successive
week-ends. Five other tournaments remain on the Whitman schedule, according
to Professor Dean F. McSloy, Whitman's Director of
Forensics. |
