The Yearbook Said

Whitman has been represented by twenty-five speakers in tournaments so far this year. After having won ten first places and numerous seconds and thirds, as well as twelve of seventeen rounds at Harvard, last year, another winning season was anticipated. This is proving to be the case.

At the W.S.U. senior division tournament William Deshler and Walter C. Minnick won first place in men's debate. John Lewallen and Donald Anderson were third. In women's debate Candace Hansen and Julie Gaisford placed second. Minnick was second in extemporaneous speaking and Miss Gaisford third in oratory.

The team of Miss Hansen and Miss Esther Hartglass won second place in the junior division tournament at Centralia College. All but two of the Whitman debaters were in their first college meet, but won nineteen debates while losing eleven.

Miss Gaisford was the winner of first place in impromptu at the Western States tournament at Arcadia, California. In addition she was third in extemporaneous speaking.

The debate teams of Deshler and Minnick and the Misses Hansen and Gaisford were each in second place in their divisions at the Seattle Pacific College tournament.

At the junior division tournament at the University of Idaho Robert Wallace and Charles Weidner were awarded second place. Student participation in the tournaments ranged from 105 to 480 from western colleges and universities.

The excellence of the work being done by Whitman debate teams is being given recognition by invitations to several of the most important tournaments in the nation this year: Harvard University, the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and M.I.T. Deshler and Minnick will be at the latter two meets on successive week-ends. Five other tournaments remain on the Whitman schedule, according to Professor Dean F. McSloy, Whitman's Director of Forensics.
