at Whitman enjoyed the largest numerical growth in the College's history this
year, with 33 students participating in intercollegiate tournaments. Under
the direction of Professor Dean McSloy the debaters traveled to W.S.U., where
Walter Minnick and Bill Deshler captured first place in Junior Men's debate,
and to Centralia College, at which tournament Julie Gaisford and Jill Burton
garnered a first-place tie in Women's debate. At the University of Idaho
tournament James Huey and George Pollock, and Julie Gaisford and Pat Wise
tied for the second-place position in debate. In February, attending the
University of Puget Sound tournament, five of Whitman's six competing debate
teams were successful in reaching the semi- finals. With
the forensic season well along Whitman planned to participate in the
following tournaments, held in April: the Pacific Forensic League, and the
Great Western tourney, both in Reno, Nevada, and the Regional Pi Kappa Delta
Competition in Bozeman, Montana. This
year the debaters have demonstrated their wares for two local clubs, and for
a speech clinic in Pullman, Washington, all of which fore7 casts a bright
future for the Whitman forensic program. |

Whitman
College debaters competed in many tournaments this year, extending from as
close as Washington State University to Harvard University. The debate team did
very well, this year. At Harvard the men's teams scored well, as did the
women's. The men's team scoring the highest from Whitman consisted of Bill
Deshler and Skeeter Minnick. A large group of interested freshmen turned out
for debate this year, showing promise of more strong teams for the future while
giving some needed help to the upperclassmen.
