Melissa and I are excited to be offering the year-starting tournament at PLU this fall, 2008! The tournament features:

  • Six rounds of parliamentary debate plus elimination rounds.
  • Relaxed atmosphere and fun getting to know new coaches and debaters.
  • Breakfast, lunch, and snacks provided.
  • Judging for schools that like MPJ and that like just a few strikes. You choose: MPJ (1, 2, 3 and one strike) or a Small number of strikes with all your judges being a “2.”
  • Topic areas, Warm room, Prep rooms, and 1 minute prep time/cross-examination before speeches during the rounds.

WHEN YOU NEED TO BE AT THE TOURNAMENT

 

Arrive 9am, Saturday, September 27; 6 Prelim Rounds; finish by 8:30pm.

Arrive 9am; Elims on Sunday, September 28; Finals finish by 7:15pm, Sunday.

Fly to Seattle-Tacoma Washington. Sea-Tac airport is about 30 minutes from Pacific Lutheran University. We suggest you order your tickets at www.expedia.com or www.travelocity.com

Sorry, the tournament is unable to provide ground transportation but there are rail, bus, taxi, and rental car options.

 

EVENTS AND DIVISIONS

 

PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE

1. DIVISIONS:

NOVICE (has been in debate at 6 or fewer tournaments AND has not advanced to elimination rounds at 3 or more tournaments)

SENIOR (open to anyone)

2. TIME LIMITS: 7-8-8-8-4-5 with one minute of preparation/cross-examination before the LOC, MG, MO, and PMR (no cross-examination before the PMR though).

Yes, there are still POI’s and yes, this is approved by the NPDA.

3. TOPIC AREAS: The Topic Areas are:

Free Trade Agreements with South America

Renewable Energy

Relations with Russia about the former Soviet bloc countries

Green Buildings

Engagement with Iran

4. RESOLUTIONS Teams will debate resolutions that the tournament will announce in a central location 20 minutes before rounds begin. The resolutions will be based on the topic areas.

5. 6 ROUNDS PLUS APPROPRIATE ELIMS

6. MPJ/STRIKES: Teams may choose to use MPJ (1, 2, 3, and one strike) or a small number of strikes with the remaining judges as 2’s.

 


ELIMINATION ROUNDS AND AWARDS

 

PARLI DEBATE BREAKS:

The break to elimination rounds will be based on, in order, the following: Win-loss record; Adjusted speaker points (drop high-lows); Total Speaker points; and Win-loss record of opposing teams.

We will advance up to half the field so long as we have sufficient judges to do so.

We will break brackets in the elimination rounds using the drop down one slot method used by Gary Larson and Rich Edwards.

PARLI DEBATE SPEAKER RANKINGS: Adjusted speaker points (drop high-lows); Total Speaker points; Double-adjusted speaker points (drop two highs; two lows); Z score.

DEBATE AWARDS: All elimination participants.

DEBATE SPEAKER AWARDS: Top half in each division.

School Fee: $30

Each Debate Team is $65

Each uncovered team is $150

Write checks to Pacific Lutheran University.

 

Each team you enter requires half a judge (two teams require you to provide one judge).

YOU MAY NOT HIRE JUDGING FOR MORE THAN 2 UNCOVERED TEAMS.

EACH UNCOVERED TEAM COSTS $150.

Judges with less than 2 years of experience coaching or debating should be noted as “Novice.”
