We are excited to host the Classic swing for 2009.

 

Last year, we had teams from Rice, Pacific, Reno, San Francisco, Washburn, as well as many others from the Northwest.

 

Our Swing features:

 

·     No round starts before 9:30am. Hey—it’s Jim Hanson running the tournament! J

·     Earn points to qualify for the NPTE!

·     One of the last chances to earn IE Legs for the NIET.

·     Food served throughout both tournaments.

·     Prep rooms for each school

·     Mutual Preference or Strikes Judging in Debate (you choose); Strikes in IE Judging.

·     We will provide transportation for teams coming into the Walla Walla airport ($50 per squad) or the Pasco airport ($100 per squad).

·     Parliers—drive over Thursday (Classic 1 and 2) or Friday (just Classic 2) and leave on Sunday.

·     IEs—drive over on Saturday and leave on Sunday—save money.

·     ONLINE Entry System—easy to enter!

AIR TRAVEL TO THE WHITMAN CLASSIC

 

Air Travel

 

Fly to Walla Walla, Washington. The Walla Walla airport is about 10 minutes from Whitman.

WALLA WALLA SHUTTLES: We will provide transportation for your entire squad up to 10 people to and from the Walla Walla airport, your hotel, and the tournament for $50.

 

Fly to Pasco, Washington. The Pasco airport is about 50 minutes from Whitman.

PASCO SHUTTLES: We will provide transportation for your entire squad up to 10 people to and from the Walla Walla airport, your hotel, and the tournament for $100.

NOTE: We will not take you to Pasco flights leaving before 10am. If you wish that, you’ll need to stay in Pasco the night before that (and we’ll drive you to your hotel in Pasco that night).

 

Fly to Portland, Oregon. About 4.5 hours from Whitman. Beautiful drive along the Columbia Gorge. Sorry, No shuttles to/from Portland available.

PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE GUIDELINES

 

1. DIVISIONS:

We use NPDA Definitions

·        OPEN (Open to anyone)

·        JUNIOR (no more than 4 semesters of college debate; has not been in elimination rounds of college junior or open division debate more than 3 times)

·        NOVICE (no high school experience; in the first two semesters of collegiate debate; has not been in elimination rounds of college debate more than 3 times)

·        Debate divisions may be collapsed if there are less than 8 teams in a division (subject to tournament director discretion); Certificates will be awarded to up to the top three teams in a collapsed division.

·        NOTE: OPEN DIVISION IS THE ONLY DIVISION OFFERED AT THE CLASSIC 1 (McSloy).

3. THE TOPICS: This year’s topic areas FOR PRELIMS AND ELIMS AT BOTH THE CLASSIC 1 AND CLASSIC 2, are:

 

The USFG should make a major diplomatic overture with Iran and/or Syria.

 

The USFG should make a substantial concession to the People’s Republic of China.

 

The USFG should significantly increase economic programs toward Indian Country.

 

The US should increase humanitarian aid to Zimbabwe.

 

The USFG should establish an energy policy substantially reducing consumption of fossil fuels in the United States.

 

·      PROCESS

·      Topic Ideas will be requested by Jim in late December/early January on Net Benefits.

·      People coming can preference-vote for the topics by emailing Jim.

·      Topic areas will be chosen based on the preferencing with some editing/selection by Jim.

·      Topic areas will be announced at least 3 weeks before the Tournament (late January).

 

4. PARLI DEBATE BREAKS:

The break to elimination rounds will be based on, in order, the following:

·        Win-loss record

·        Adjusted speaker points (drop high-lows)

·        Total Speaker points

·        Win-loss record of opposing teams.

We will break brackets in the elimination rounds using the drop down one slot method used by Gary Larson and Rich Edwards.

We will break up to half the field assuming we have sufficient judges EXCEPT THAT FOR THE CLASSIC 1, WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT THE NUMBER OF ELIM ROUNDS DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINTS.

 

5. PARLI DEBATE SPEAKER RANKINGS: Adjusted speaker points (drop high-lows); Total Speaker points; Z score.

 

6. DEBATE AWARDS: For all elimination participants.

 

7. DEBATE SPEAKER AWARDS: Top half of all debaters in each division.

 

 

INDIVIDUAL EVENTS GUIDELINES

 

1. DIVISIONS 

 

·        OPEN DIVISION (Open to anyone) IN ALL EVENTS

·        JUNIOR DIVISION IMPROMPTU AND EXTEMP (You have not advanced to elims 6 or more times in junior/senior division college or hs toc division/nfl nationals tournaments and you have not competed 12 or more times in junior/senior division college or hs toc division/nfl nationals tournaments in Impromptu or Extemp.)

·        IE divisions may be collapsed if there are less than 12 competitors in a division (subject to tournament director discretion); Awards and if appropriate, a separate finals round, will be provided for competitors in a collapsed division.

 

2. ALL INDIVIDUAL EVENTS ARE IN THE SAME PATTERN

 

Extemp, Informative, Prose, Duo, Poetry, ADS, Impromptu, P.O.I., Persuasion, Communication Analysis, Dramatic Interp

 

All events follow NIET rules. Impromptu will use a quotation, a word, and a question.

3. TRIPLE ENTERING—IMPORTANT NOTE THESE EXCEPTIONS:

 

·        Students can at maximum triple enter in a Pattern except EXTEMPERS AND DUO INTERPERS CANNOT TRIPLE ENTER.

·        EXTEMPERS CANNOT DO DUO INTERP.

·        Extempers MUST DO their extemp speech first if they are first or second extemp speaker. Extempers MUST DO their other event first if they are third or later extemp speaker.
Extempers in Open division must work exclusively on their own. Extempers in Junior division may receive some help from open competitors but not from coaches.

·        Note: students may enter in two Duo Interps as long as it is with a different partner.

 

4. INDIVIDUAL EVENTS BREAKS AND FINALS RANKINGS:

·        Breaking to finals and finals results will be based on, in order, the following: Total rankings; Total rating; Total ranking and rating minus the worst ranking and rating; Judge preference.

·        We will break to finals the number of legs in that event except that if there is a tie, we’ll break tied competitors unless that would create an elimination round with more than 6 competitors.

 

5. INDIVIDUAL EVENTS AWARDS:

·        1st, 2nd, 3rd, Finalists.

·        If impromptu or extemp is collapsed, we will provide equivalent awards for the junior division competitors (and we will try to have a separate junior finals round as well).

Judging Commitment

 

Each parliamentary judge covers 1 or 2 teams. If covering 1 team, that judge’s obligation is 4 rounds plus elims (but we will pay that judge $15 for the extra required prelim round).

 

Each IE judge covers 6 IE slots.

 

Note: Except for one judge maximum in debate and one judge maximum in individual events, your judges must be able to judge Open division if they are covering Open division competitors.

 

Note: Judges may judge Open division of events only if they have 2 or more years of interscholastic coaching or competing experience relevant to that event (debating, interping, or speaking). Exceptions to this policy will only be made if we do not have enough senior division judges.
