Work Scholars

The WNDI Work-Scholarships are given
to students who have a record of commitment and hard work in Policy or LD
Debate and is based on family income. These scholarships try to make our camp
affordable for working and middle income families.
Answers to Common Questions Below
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Work-Scholarship provides a minimum of $200 (2 week) or $300 (3 week) and
a maximum of $700 (2 week) or $1000 (3 week). Policy and LD Scholars may
receive at most $500. The actual amount you receive is determined based on
income and the number of worthy applications.
In general, those without substantial assets beyond home and cars and who are
living on family incomes of $50,000 (first adult) plus $20,000 (second adult)
plus $10,000 (for each additional dependent) or less income are eligible
(though, obviously not guaranteed as it depends on the work-scholarship
applications we receive as well as the number of students registering for the
camp).
Sorry, the WNDI Work Scholarship is
not available to Public Forum participants (as we aren't able to provide work
then and the cost of that program is already low priced).
Complete
Applications are due by Monday, May 11.
WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU
If you receive a work-scholarship, you need to arrive Saturday, July 18, by
2pm. You will check-in and then from 4 to 10:30pm (with a dinner break) on
Saturday and from 11am to 5pm (with a lunch break) on Sunday, you will assist
in the setup of the camp. This work includes helping with our printing
of camp evidence, setting up fans and fridges in residence hall rooms, and
using a computer to create documents (word processing, e-mail) such as lists
of hyperlinks on the policy and LD topics. Your work will not interfere with
the camp as you will be finished when the camp begins.
1. The actual amount of work-scholarship money given to
students varies--in 2007 and 2008, we had a large number of applicants so the
amount we were able to offer each student was lower; in 2006, we had less
people apply, so the amount we could offer was more. In all years, the higher
your income, the less we are able to offer.
2. Notification of whether you received a work scholarship will occur a few
days before or on Monday, May 18 via e-mail.
ANSWERS
TO COMMON QUESTIONS
1. When
do I find out if I receive a work-scholarship?
Approximately May 18.
2. How
much will I receive?
This totally depends on your income, how many
applicants for the work-scholarship we receive, the number of registrations
for the camp, and the number of orders for our debate evidence during the
past year.
Generally speaking, families with incomes
over $50,000, should not expect much more than the minimum amounts but even
this is a rough estimate. It really does depend on the factors noted above.
3. How
do I apply?
Complete the regular registration, then at
the end of that, you will find the link to the Work-Scholars application.
4.
Should I pay the deposit before hearing about the scholarship offered in May?
You can wait until you hear about your
work-scholarship offer in May; at that point, you’ll need to pay your deposit
shortly after accepting your work-scholarship and position at the camp.
