NATIONAL CAMP CONDUCT AGREEMENT
The objective of the
Whitman College debate camp is to provide a safe environment for learning. To
that end, we expect students to agree to the following standards of personal
behavior. Students who violate any of the following standards of conduct may
have their parents contacted; participation in the institute terminated; or
lesser penalties imposed as deemed appropriate by the Director of the camp.
1. I will respect the
learning environment by refraining from interrupting lectures, speaking loudly
in the library, being distractive during lab time, etc. I will respect others
learning in classrooms, living in residence halls, studying in the library, and
working in outdoor areas.
2. I will respect the
library’s staff, materials, and building. I will abide by the library rules of circulation
and conduct. I will not write in library materials.
3. I will treat computers
with respect. I will not move computers or any of their parts from their
location.
4. I will research and
debate in an honest and ethical manner. I will not fabricate evidence,
plagiarize the work of others, nor purposefully tag evidence that dishonestly
represents the argument that the author presents.
5. I will respect and
support other students in the institute. I will not demean the efforts of
others nor interfere with the effective learning of other students.
6. I will be cooperative
with staff. I shall abide by staff requests to follow appropriate behavior
necessary to the safety and learning of the institute.
7. I will attend all
lectures, lab sessions, and practice debates. If I am ill, I will notify or
have a friend notify a staff member immediately.
8. I will refrain from
harassing other students and staff including unwanted touching, sexualized
comments, picking on people with demeaning comments, and derogatory references
to a student based on their race, religion, gender, etc.
HEALTH ISSUES
9. I will maintain my
health through good diet and rest, and I will notify the staff if I think I
have a health problem that could affect others.
10. I will conduct myself
in a safe and cautious manner in order to avoid accidents to others and myself.
11. I will refrain from
possessing, using, purchasing, or otherwise being involved in any way with
alcohol or illegal drugs or the misuse of chemical substances.
12. I will not smoke
tobacco in any building nor within 50 feet of any entrance to any building.
Further, if I am a smoker, I will not encourage nor share my tobacco with
non-smoking students.
LIVING ISSUES
13. I will remain on
campus at all times unless: a) I am taken by institute staff, b) I take a walk
with at least one other camp person within 5 blocks of Whitman College during
lunch or dinner. If I wish to go off campus after dark or go further than 5
blocks away during lunch or dinner, I will speak with a staff member to get
permission. Further, I understand that when I leave Whitman’s campus under any
circumstance, Whitman’s liability is removed and I do so at my own risk.
14. I will keep staff
members and other students notified of my whereabouts.
15. I will refrain from
having social visits in my room and instead use the lounges and public spaces
in the residence hall.
16. I will be in my room
by 12:25am each night of the camp. I will respect the wishes of my roommate to
have lights out at that time if he or she wishes. I will not leave my room
until 7:30am except to use the bathroom or for other physical necessity.
Students who wish to exercise or do other legitimate activities earlier in the
morning may do so in teams of two or more, after receiving the approval of Jim
Hanson or the Residence Hall manager.
17. I will respect fire
codes for the residence hall and will not set off false alarms.
18. I will respect the
privacy and property of others and not engage in theft or vandalism. I
understand that I will be responsible for the cost of any items that I damage.
19. I will be responsible
for cleaning my residence hall room upon departure and for making sure that I
do not leave items behind. I understand that I will be responsible for any
needed cleaning charges and mailing and handling fees.
I understand that staff
members have the right to ensure that I will adhere to these standards
including by excluding me from functions and/or requiring me to do cleaning
duty. Further, the director of the camp has the right to expel me from the camp
if he feels that my presence means that these learning, health, and living
issues cannot be assured.
