DURING CAMP, “LIFE” DUTIES

A. RESIDENCE HALL DUTIES

You will have residence hall duties even if you do not live in the dorm, 10:30pm to 1am. Rob will post information about this.

Male Staff Members: You will also have lunch or dinner duties where you monitor areas between Jewett and Reid.

B. KEEPING THE CAMP ALCOHOL, DRUG, AND CAVORTING FREE

I CANNOT overstate the importance of making sure that this is a drug-free, alcohol-free, “cavorting-free” environment. Parents, teachers, PEOPLE WHO PAY TO COME TO OUR CAMP AND PAY FOR YOUR SALARY ARE DEEPLY CONCERNED. They want to know “will the dorms be supervised” and “will the dorms be safe” and “is there drug use at your camp?”

1. If you find a student drinking alcohol or using drugs, you are to confiscate these items and to report it to me immediately. Do NOT hide this from me--the repercussions would be terrible.

2. If you find students inappropriately cavorting, ask them to stop and watch them separate and leave the area.

3. Students who smoke may do so but

a. may not share cigarettes with students who do not smoke

b. AND may occur only outside of buildings, far, far away from entrance areas.

c. You are expected to enforce this effort to stop addiction to this health and institute killer.

4. Students are expected to be in bed by 12:30am. If one of the two roommates wants lights out, the lights are to be out. You are expected to enforce this curfew in a way that respects student privacy.

C. RESPECTING STUDENT PRIVACY

You are expected to respect the privacy of students in their rooms however:

1. From 9am to 12:30am (morning to curfew), when you knock on a student room’s door, students are expected to answer the door.

2. If you wish to knock on a student room after 12:30am, or at anytime, you wish the student to open the door so you can view the room after you knock, or at anytime, you wish to enter a student room or inspect items in a student’s room after knocking, you may do so where:

a) you can see inappropriate behavior in the room in plain sight (e.g. through a window);

b) you believe there is an emergency in the room (i.e. someone’s life in the room is in danger or you have direct evidence that the student in the room is very ill; or you could knock on a room after 12:30am if a student in the room is specifically needed to help deal with an emergency occurring with another person);

or c) you have direct evidence that a student in the room is engaged in an activity against camp rules;

examples of direct evidence include
--you know that a student that stays in the room wasn’t there at curfew and you are engaged in the 12:30am room check
--you can smell an illegal substance coming from the room
--a student tells you who has directly seen the recent behavior (don’t go on vague assertions; the student needs to say he/she saw the student very recently doing the behavior in the room)
--you hear noises coming from the room that indicate camp rule violations (such as a person’s voice who doesn’t live in the room).

Please get another staff member to be with you before entering or looking into a student’s room unless it is an emergency.

Permission from Jim should be sought in questionable situations.

D. NOTIFICATION TO JIM

You are required to notify Jim in the event that a student violates the camp rules, suggests romantic contact with you, or anything occurs which would endanger or harm other students or staff members. PLEASE—DO NOT “PROTECT” A STUDENT or something like that. TELL ME. Your and my worst nightmare is not being aware of a problem.

E. THE WATCH ‘EM LIST

During the camp, especially the first few days, you are expected to email Jim and Rob with names of any students that should be watched more closely so that we assure they follow the rules and don’t endanger their time at the WNDI.

F. YOU NEED TO BE A RESPONSIBLE ADULT FIGURE

1. You are responsible for these students; you may be called on to drive a sick student to the hospital late at night. At least THREE staff members should be able to do this at any time. I EXPECT THERE TO BE AT LEAST THREE STAFF MEMBERS, ONE FEMALE AND ONE MALE, IN THE RESIDENCE HALL EACH NIGHT. Our Residence Hall Director is in charge of scheduling this. A male staff member will also monitor areas during lunch and dinner.

2. You may not drink in front of students. You may not be drunk nor smell of alcohol near students. YOU MAY NOT HAVE CONSUMED ALCOHOL 8 OR LESS HOURS BEFORE BEING IN CONTACT WITH STUDENTS. I will not even comment on other intoxicants.

If your drinking interferes with your work, you may be fined, suspended, and fired at Jim’s discretion. Interference includes performing at lower than your expected performance level, looking disheveled or hung over, being the focus of a security incident, or being grumpy/uninviting to students/other staff.

3. IF YOU SMOKE, PLEASE DO SO AWAY FROM STUDENTS--do not smoke with students; do not smoke in view of students; and do not share or sell any tobacco products to/with students.

4. You need to get rest. Showing up for a lecture, debate, or lab with little rest is not fair to the students nor to me as you are not providing the quality of instruction we expect.

5. I think it goes without saying that use of illegal substances on campus is absolutely inappropriate. Ditto for loud parties and unruly behavior.

G. NO DRIVING STUDENTS EXCEPT IN EMERGENCIES OR IF YOU HAVE JIM’S PERMISSION

You may NOT drive or take students off-campus under any circumstances except an emergency and, with my permission and van safety certification, to pick up and take students to the airport/bus station.

You may not drive students unless 1) You are a Whitman van safety certified AND are driving a Whitman vehicle or 2) It is a medical emergency and no Whitman vehicle is available. You also may not ride in a vehicle driven by a student.

H. MAJOR NOTICE: NO DISCUSSION OF OR ENGAGING IN SEXUAL/ROMANTIC RELATIONS WITH STUDENTS.

1. You will not forge nor suggest romantic or sexual relations with students during the camp.

2. You will not discuss or joke about such relations nor will you discuss or joke about student-to-student relations.

3. Discussions about any romantic/sexual relations will be avoided. This includes asking students about their romantic relationships.

4. At best, you could discuss relations in a general way in a large group setting for the purpose of discussing public policy issues. Beyond that, AVOID IT.

5. You will not touch, massage, or be in very close physical proximity to a student. PERIOD.

6. You will not place yourself in situations where you and one other student are alone in a closed room.

7. You will not place undue attention on any student; you will not stare at or repeatedly look at any student; you will not flirt with a student.

8. If students ask/raise an issue concerning sexual/romantic relations, please skirt the discussion unless they need personal help for an emotional/social problem and you discuss it with them privately but in an area where others could see you.

I. YOU MAY NOT STAY UP PAST CURFEW PREPARING STUDENTS

When the curfew has been set, your prep time is up. If you are in charge of the residence hall, you MAY NOT change the curfew to address your desire to help a team prep.

IF YOU HELP PREP A TEAM THAT IS NOT IN YOUR LAB, you need to tell Jeff so that he can avoid having you judge that team.

J. ADDITIONAL NOTES

In a few cases, students of different genders will stay in the same room.

NO ONE can be in a room that is not their own. Visits must occur in the lounge.
