You have a multifaceted job
and it includes doing random work for Jim as he frequently needs help to make
the camp operate smoothly. Jim greatly appreciates the time and effort that you
put into this job. In the event that you work more than 160 hours (sleeping
hours 1am to 9am don’t count unless you make a hospital run), tell Jim, you
will be compensated for your extra work.
AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CAMP
1. SCHEDULE RESIDENCE HALL DUTIES, LUNCH-DINNER
SWEEP DUTIES, AND LAB DINNERS.
Schedule as noted below using
the Excel Spreadsheet Jim gives you—Ask Jim for it.
Email Jim the spreadsheet
when you have completed it.
10:30PM TO 1AM EACH NIGHT Schedule two males and two females for Jewett in
addition to yourself each and every
night of the camp
1AM TO 3AM EACH NIGHT Schedule one
person for Jewett.
ON SAT NITE 8 TO 10:30pm AND SUN MORN 9:45am to
12:45pm: Schedule one person for Jewett.
LUNCH AND DINNER EACH DAY (Except Saturday and
Sunday dinners) Schedule one person (usually a male) for Sweep Duties.
DINNER MONDAY-FRIDAY schedule lab leaders to eat
dinner with their kids.
NOTE:
Head Printer does not do
Res Hall Duties.
Camp Assistants do not do
Res Hall Duties on Saturday-Sunday the weekend the camp starts, nor on Monday
week two and three (they’ll be printing).
Don’t schedule people for
the third week if they aren’t working then.
Shuttle drivers do not do
Res Hall Duties on any Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Don’t schedule dinner sweep
for someone that is doing a lab dinner at the same time.
Try to put friends/couples
together for res hall night duties.
You need to equalize time as much as possible among
males and then among females (females will get more time—they are compensated
for it).
Remember that LUNCH is 1 hour; DINNER is 1.5 hours;
EVENINGS are 2.5 hours.
2. POST SCHEDULE OF LAB LEADERS GOING TO DINNER
ON THE RES HALL DUTIES
SCHEDULE: Note who is going to dinner with their labs when (contact Jim about
how this works).
3. COORDINATE LUNCH SECOND HEAD MONITOR
Matt Schissler will be the
second person with you in the dining hall monitoring students each day at
lunch.
4. POST STAFF INFORMATION
Post the Staff member names,
room numbers, and phone numbers on the wall in TWO PLACES near the Jewett
Entrance—but not where someone from outside could see it.
YOU ARE ALSO REQUIRED to
post an accompanying sign making it VERY CLEAR that no one is to take the sign
down.
YOU ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO
POST YOUR CELL PHONE NUMBER FOR EMERGENCIES. POST JIM’S CELL NUMBER:
360-536-1983. POST JIM’S OFFICE NUMBER: 527-5499.
5. HANDLE EARLY ARRIVAL STUDENTS (Saturday arriving
students)
·
Two to four
kids: The Work-Study Kids chosen by the Head Policy Print Person to help with
printing remain in Hunter. However, you need to do attendance checks with them.
·
Two kids:
Working with the Check-In Person; They help with kids getting luggage from
Hunter to the Residence Halls.
·
The remaining
Work Study Kids help put fridges, fans, and little garbage cans into each room.
You are in charge of coordinating this with the Move-In people.
·
For the kids
who aren’t working, you are responsible for getting them games, a walk to
Safeway and something else to pass the time. Saturday evening, you are
responsible for getting them a movie to watch and for setting up a Frisbee
game.
·
EARLY ARRIVAL
STUDENTS MUST BE IN HUNTER SATURDAY MORNING AND AFTERNOON. IN THE EVENING, WHEN
THE FRISBEE GAME/MOVIE STARTS, THESE STUDENTS CAN BE AT HUNTER OR AT JEWETT. They CANNOT be unsupervised.
·
You are
responsible for getting food for the early arrival kids Saturday lunch,
Saturday dinner, and Sunday lunch. Talk with Jim about what to get including
getting food for staff who are working.
6. YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF THE PICNICS
·
Setup and email
people to confirm they will work at the picnics.
·
Use camp
assistants to help with your effort after confirming with Jim this is okay.
·
Before each
picnic, you pickup, deliver and setup the tables and chairs plus the garbage
cans, soda, game equipment, picnic supplies, etc.
·
During the
picnic, you help with food setup as needed.
·
After each
picnic, you handle trash, takedown and return the tables, chairs, garbage cans,
game equipment, etc.
·
PICNIC 1:
SATURDAY, 4 PEOPLE
·
PICNIC 2:
SUNDAY, 6 PEOPLE
·
PICNIC 3:
SATURDAY, 3 PEOPLE
·
PICNIC 4:
SUNDAY, 5 PEOPLE (For this picnic, you help in purchasing and preparing
food—burger and hot dog grilling)
·
START AT 4:30PM
EXCEPT PICNIC 4—START AT 2PM.
·
FINISH AT
9:30PM
DURING THE CAMP
1. ROOM LIST POSTING
Post the Room List by Room
and Room List by First Name in TWO PLACES near the Jewett Entrance WITH A SIGN
SAYING DO NOT TAKE DOWN. Note, these lists usually get changed a bit during the
first couple of days so be ready to put up new versions of these.
2. MONDAY NIGHT CAPTURE THE FLAG GAME NEAR JEWETT
Get a game of Capture the
Flag going near Jewett.
3. EMERGENCIES/HOSPITAL/URGENT CARE TRIPS
·
Jim will email you
a copy of the medical insurance forms. Print them. These must be kept in your
Jewett room (in a secure spot) so that when an emergency happens, you have them
readily available.
·
You may not
show these forms to anyone except to medical personnel and to staff who are
directly needed to assist in the medical issue.
·
You’ll need a
car and van safety certification. You will drive students to the urgent care
facility or hospital as needed.
·
Put the first
aid kit somewhere in the main lounge where it won’t be taken away/played with.
The reason it doesn’t go into the kitchen—there is already one there and in
2006, a kid left our first aid kit on the stove and it burned setting off a
fire alarm.
4. HANDLE DISCIPLINE
Handle discipline and other
social issues in the residence hall. THE
A) Prevent Bad Stuff. Talk
with Kids. Observe kids. Identify trouble kids and watch them more.
B) Be on the watch-out for
drugs and alcohol. That includes keeping an ear for kids talking about it;
Sweeping the area around Jewett, Olin and Maxey for kids using or storing drugs
there; kids showing signs of intoxication; kids leaving for ‘walks’ etc. I want
kids showing signs of problems talked to. I want you to report these kids’
names to Jim. I want kids taking walks to be monitored—have a staff member
basically follow them.
C) Dialogue with kids.
Explain why it is important to the camp and to them that they follow the rules.
D) Use punishment only as a
last resort.
E) Jim is willing to step
in and he should definitely be told about problems but you should be the first
person to handle issues.
5. KEEP IN COMMUNICATION WITH JIM
Keep Jim in the loop
concerning any significant events or issues. IF ANYTHING IS OUT OF THE
ORDINARY—TELL JIM. RIGHT AWAY.
6A. MONITOR JEWETT
·
ON THE FIRST NIGHT OF THE CAMP, EMAIL JIM with a
Plan to stop spills from soiling the carpets/furniture in Jewett. Follow
through on this plan.
·
You should be
in the Jewett lounge each and every night
10pm to 1am. Sunday through
Friday
8pm to 1am, Saturday
·
You need to post a list of who is on duty each night
AND their cell phone numbers AND Jewett room numbers if relevant.
This list should be in large sharpie pen, easily visible in the entry to
Jewett, and posted in the same place each night.
·
You should also
be in the Jewett lounge during check-in and check-out days.
·
You should also
be in the Jewett lounge Saturday morning 9am to 10am and Sunday morning 9 am to
12:30pm.
·
At 12:15am, you
need to go through the lounge, downstairs, and all hallways and loudly announce
that students need to get ready for bedcheck at 12:25am. DO THIS EVERY NIGHT.
It gets the kids prepared for what is coming—their bed time. (Note—12:45am and
12:55am for Saturday nights and the last night of the 2 and 3 week sessions)
·
You will have a
key to handle lockouts from residence rooms. You are expected to help kids with
that.
·
Make sure that
each window on the first floor has an object in them that prevents the window
from opening easily even when open. I don’t want people breaking in.
·
Fun nights. You
are in charge of getting games going that occur in the Jewett residence
lounges. Other staff are in charge of games on Ankeny/outside of Jewett.
·
You are in
charge of handling birthdays. Jim will email you about these—you’ll get a cake/ice
cream/pie and gifts for these birthdays.
·
Replenish the
paper towels in the Jewett bathrooms. Check the Jewett rooms for dirtiness and
report it to Jim.
·
Spill on the carpet? Stain? Damage? Contact Jim and
Conference Events immediately.
·
MAKE SURE
THAT THE JEWETT LOUNGES AND KITCHENS ARE DECENTLY CLEAN. If they aren’t, you
need to clean them.
Tell the late night staff to do random room and
attendance checks particularly of trouble kids. for example, at 11:30pm, find
each of the trouble kids.
Reminder: Kids cannot leave the area right outside
of jewett unless they are with a staff member.
One of the three residence hall people SHOULD take a
group to safeway/starbucks; at least two of the res hall staff have to stay.
6B. Tell the staff to send you a list of "KIDS
TO WATCH" emailed to you by monday night; it should be updated on wed or
thurs as well as when needed. "KIDS TO WATCH" aren't bad kids per se,
they are just the more wild types that are more likely to be involved in camp
banned activities.
7. ATTENDANCE AND LAB ROOM CHECK
Take attendance AND check
for messy lab rooms each and every day at the following times:
9:45am (morning
lecture/labs/debates)
1:45pm (afternoon
labs/debates)
7:45pm (evening
labs/debates)
10:30pm (residence
hall/olin computer lab)
12:30am (residence hall,
bed time; Saturday night and last night of 2 and 3 week sessions, 1am)
·
If someone is
missing, find them. Write his/her name down. If they are missing/late twice,
they are a “problem” child and need to be monitored closely.
Try to find the student in
the residence hall if you can’t find them. KNOCK VERY VERY LOUDLY ON THEIR DOOR.
If it is 15 minutes
late—IMMEDIATELY CALL JIM. WE HAVE TO CALL SECURITY AND FIND THE STUDENT.
·
If a student is sick in his/her room, you are
expected to check on them each time there is an attendance check.
·
If a room is
messy, immediately report it to Jim (email him with the name of the responsible
staff member). YOU AND THAT STAFF MEMBER MUST CLEAN THE ROOM IMMEDIATELY.
8. HANDLE THE JEWETT STORE
The Jewett Store is you in
the Jewett Lounge from 7 to 7:45pm Monday through Friday and Sunday, 10:30 to
11:15pm.
You sell tubs, expandos,
manilla folders, etc. See Jim/Pre-Camp Assistants for our supply of these items
(we buy a bunch at the beginning of the camp)
Students can also email
requests for additional items to you.
You sell items at cost
rounded up to the nearest dollar.
Keep receipts. Give money
and receipts to Jim.
Mail is handled by Jim’s Camp Assistants.
9. TAKE PICTURES
Take pictures of the kids
during camp. If Jim requests, crop and resize them per Jim’s instructions. Tell
Jim when you are finished.
10. MONITOR DINING HALL EATING
You eat with the kids at the
Dining Hall at each meal along with a second staff member. Make sure students
are busing their tables and throwing away their trash. Assist in the cleanup.
9 to 9:45am, Breakfast
(except on Saturdays and Sundays—breakfast is in Jewett on those days—you
monitor in Jewett)
12:45 to 1:30pm, Lunch
6:15 to 7pm, Dinner (except
on Sundays when we go to the Picnic; you go to the Picnic)
Note: Your food throughout
the camp is free.
11. YOU GET TWO BREAKS
The Head Printer Person will
takeover Head Life Director Duties one evening each week. This entails dinner duty;
attendance check at 7:30pm; residence hall duties 10pm to 1am; breakfast duty;
attendance check at 10am; lunch duties. Work the day out with the Head Printer
Person and report it to Jim.
12. EACH THURSDAY NIGHT—DO A VISUAL INSPECTION OF
EACH AND EVERY ROOM TO MAKE SURE IT IS NOT “DIRTY” (MUST BE VACUMED, PICKED UP)
Work with the Res Hall
Monitors for that evening to do this. Don’t be picky—just stuff that is going
to cause problems like ground in dirt—broken windows, someone smoked in a room,
etc.
13. EACH THURSDAY NIGHT—DO A VISUAL INSPECTION OF
THE VENDING MACHINES IN OLIN, HUNTER, AND JEWETT
If any items are out or
low—please email Jim with that information (he can then get them ordered).
14. ASSIST WITH CLEANUP OF OLIN AND HUNTER
15. TWO WEEK AND THREE WEEK CHECK OUT
You are in charge of two and
three week check out. You’ll have two assistants. See the check-out page for
the details: 57-check-out-people.htm
FOR THE WEDNESDAY NIGHT MEETING
(end of 2 week and end of 3 week sessions)
·
Pass out a
sheet where kids sign their names and what day and time they will be checking
out. Use that to monitor kids and help make check-out go smoothly without being
overloaded.
·
Pass out the
Check-Out Information Sheet. EMAIL JIM TO HAVE HIM PRINT THESE.
·
Figure out a
way to monitor 2 week students who stay until Friday. Suggestions: Have them
meet at 7:30pm for attendance check with the rest of the kids; Do a bed check
at regular time.
16.
ASSIST WITH RESIDENCE HALL AND ACADEMIC BUILDING END OF SECOND AND THIRD WEEK
CLEANUP
This entails removing items from emptied rooms,
organizing fans, pillows, sheets, towels, fridges in the lounge, other clean
up. This will occur at the end of the Second Week and the end of the Third
Week.
Each kid also has to show
his/her keys.
