Issue? Email Jake at ginsbajw@whitman.edu or Jim at hansonjb@whitman.edu

NOTICE: IF YOU WISH TO CHANGE YOUR RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT, YOU NEED TO CLEAR IT WITH JAKE GINSBACH AND JIM HANSON. WHY? We have to keep the number of DA, CP and K even; we need to make sure there is no overlap with positions; and you can’t cut two disads; two cp’s; or two K’s; and Jake needs to assure your research fits in with the goals of the camp’s overall research needs.

Nietzsche Kritik

1. The ideology created by the affirmative assumes that the Truth it creates is the correct interpretation for events in the natural world. This ideology leads to violence as it attempts to manipulate and control things in the world (the environment, people etc) in the name of the value system they are affirming.

2. The affirmative creates an ideal world through their ideologies and value systems in the 1ac (like a world free of waste, or more connected with nature and being) this ideology causes us to hate this world in favor of that more perfect world. The 1ac attributes all suffering and violence as a lack of this ideal world, and causes violence against those things and people who prevent that ideal world from coming about.

3. The affirmative preserves decadence (our current social systems, moral systems, ideologies and systems of value) via their advantages in the 1ac. Decadence is only possible when humans are reduced to being a part of the herd, content with clinging to a safety in numbers mentality for safety and security. Nietzsche says this mentality leads to the destruction of life because we no longer have those people who step outside our current social values and create new ones, thus pushing humanity forward.

4. The appeal to equality created by the affirmative (economic equality, equal access to energy, social equality) leads to endless wars against all those who are seen as stronger than the weaker and more oppressed portions of society. By creating a universal ideology for humanity where the values of the oppressed and weak are considered good, and the values of the strong are considered evil, it allows anything to be done to those who are considered evil because they are the affirmative is acting in the name of what is good for humanity.

The impact to these link arguments is the destruction of life, through denial of this world in favor of a more perfect one, or through the spreading of the herd mentality. For Nietzsche the herd mentality leads to extinction because it doesn’t foster the creation of great people who shatter old social systems in favor of new one’s that push humanity forward.

The alternative to the criticism is to refuse to act in the face of the impacts of the affirmative. By refusing to act it prevents one ideology from gaining hold over all of humanity and it allows us to accept the impacts of the affirmative. For Nietzsche suffering is necessary for survival of humankind because suffering creates conditions that push humanity forward. By appealing to safety it creates a herd mentality that doesn’t allow us to create and destroy value systems (a process that is neccesary for the survival and advancement of humankind).
